I have a 20$ gift certificate which would take the X-Fi Platinum down to 60$ AR. I have good speakers (Z5500's with satellites replaced with book shelves) and I need a sound card for my secondary (family's) PC.

But after my stupid 1500$ insurance bill I only have 500$ and I'm trying to save for a 1300$ laptop.

That's the thing, I really need to put my Audigy 2 in the other PC for various reasons.

Optical output. 180 bucks? Get it.

The fact it's made by Creative should be enough to tell you not to buy it.

Are you kidding? The optical out isn't even bit-perfect. But at $60 after rebate and gift certificate, it's a pretty good deal.

It won't offer you anything over the Audigy 2 in terms of sound quality. The analog outputs are slightly better than the A2, but the digital is the same. They may have fixed some of the resampling issues with previous cards, though, in which case the digital out may be better. Probably not that noticable, though.

Considering that it's not much more expensive than an A2 after savings, I would say get it.

I just like the front panel. That'll come in handy.

EDIT: It looks like the XiFi does do bit perfect if you set it out Audio Creation mode.
