BIOS POST Failures

Just a tech support post. After deleting some files (movies and such), I was gonna restart the computer before I did a defrag (which I haven't done on this comp for about 2 years). So I tried to restart it, and... nothing happened. The screen was getting no input, and was in standby mode, and everything was quiet, except for the fact that the HD activity light was solid.

So then I pushed the manual reset button. No beans.

Held the power button until it turned off, then turned it back on again: Silent as death, no input to the monitor, solid HD activity light.

Switched off the power supply, opened up the case to investigate, saw nothing. Let it sit open for a while, then about five minutes later, tried my luck again: still nothing.

Exasperated, I switched the power supply on and off, and everything worked; well, almost. I got the standard startup screen, then before windows loaded, it told me that "Multiple BIOS POST attempts have failed. Memory timings have been reset to automatic settings." and prompted me to go to setup.

After entering the setup, and seeing nothing, exited and windows loaded normally.

Then I thumbed through the guide for the board and such, which basically produced nothing, as there were no beeps nor anything displayed on the screen to indicate any errors. Afterwards, there was no log or anything of what had happened, just that the POST had failed.

So, any ideas? Is there a way I can explore the problem without restarting the computer? I'm working on backing up all my files as this came randomly and for now it seems to just be a general "board" problem or a PSU problem. I'm a bit hesitant to just have a blank screen and a silent computer again and no way to recover my data. It's an Intel board I've been using for a while, and I haven't changed anything on it for ages. Hell, the last thing I installed period was blockland about a month ago again.

I'm leaning toward it being a PSU problem from what I've read on Google, but I wanted to double check. So, any opinions?

Thanks for reading the post.

Honestly, that's weird. Sounds like something is failing--PSU, HDD or RAM most likely.

It could also be that it just glitched out, corrupting the bios. It then reset itself after detecting its corruption.

It's not unheard of, but if it happens often then there's something serious.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

That sounds a lot like my setup, and like what happened. Hyperthreading comp w/ SP1, etc. Definitely something to look into, thanks for your help.

I've had computers just suddenly fail to boot.

Though mine never came back. :(
Wikissassi sucks.
