Actually.. it would probably be possible if you ran from the wall out to the edge and timed it right to turn back and run back in towards the wall.

That's the cool thing about SMB3. Even if you completely change what direction you're running in, you still maintain some of the momentum you've attained toward getting airborne, so it's possible to get airborne by running back and forth on a small piece of open space.
