So, I pop open ye olde laptop and start up Miranda. Miranda had been configured to run, among other things, as an IRC client. So, by default, when I go "online", it tries to connect to IRC.

Apparently, MU has decided that I'm trying to lol hack teh NETWARK and has blocked my access because I tried to use port 6667. :downs: Now, I can't use the Internet connection for one hour because I tried to HAX0R TEH NETW0RK.

Wolfy: You should write some big math program that runs over the network on 6667 so everyone gets banned. That'll show em! :p

They probably did that because too many idiots got their PCs turned into zombies. They usually connect to private IRC servers to receive commands.

Try using IRC over SSL if the server supports it (not sure if Miranda supports it, Gaim doesn't). Default port for it is 7001, and you'll usually need to check a box or otherwise explicitly indicate you want to connect via SSL.

Zirc at least lets you connect normally via 6660-6669 as well, if they're only concerned about 6667.

I don't get it. You pay tens of thousands in tuition to use their system, then they get all uppity and decide what you can or cannot do with an internet connection.
