RAM question

This guy I work with at CompUSA is bugging me about how getting faster ram (7200RPM) would be very noticeable in my new computer, as opposed to the RAM we have in store (5200).

Do you guys think it really makes a difference?

Right now I have 1GB DDR2 5200rpm centon.
Complimenting my 8800GTX 768 MB Geforce... 1GB minimum required.
Some programs crash after awhile, like half-life 2 on highest settings.
I need to add some RAM soon.

The real reason I'm asking is because I can get it much cheaper with in-store discount + rebates.

Faster RAM should improve things like load times.
Pissed Off?

RAM doesn't have RPM Ratings. Its solid state with no moving parts (RPM=Rotations per Minute). If you're talking about RAM (the speed of which is measured in mhz), I'm afraid that I'm not qualified to answer. If you're talking about a hard-drive, then jumping to 7200RPM would make quite a difference in access times (basically, things would load faster). Ask around the tech forum, and I'm sure someone will give you a better answer.

As Forsakahn said, RAM doesn't spin, thus doesn't have RPM ratings.

If you were talking about the speed, in MHz, that your RAM runs at, it depends. If your current RAM is already running at your motherboard's top speed (which is likely), then getting faster RAM won't help. It won't be able to run any faster than it already is.

Load times will only be as fast as the slowest component involved. The hard drive is likely to be this component... although having more physical RAM can keep Windows from swapping stuff out to virtual memory (on the hard drive) which can also help load times.

A. I assume you're talking about RAM, not hard drives.
B. Having a low amount of ram won't make Half-Life 2 just crash.
C. 1GB of RAM is still a decent amount of RAM.

Ok ok, maybe not RPM, but faster RAM vs slower RAM.

And the reason why I think 1 GB is crashing it is because it's a very intensive card, with a 1GB minimum. Perhaps over the minimum would be better unless I want to run it on the lower settings.

I ran HL2 fine on 1 GB before my most recent upgrade.
<Lyme> I got Fight Club for 6.98 at walmart.

The new Geforces have a RAM requirement?!?

My ram always crashes on me. It's horrible.. horrible...

During the holidays, I saw so many discounts on RAM. 1 gb at one store was only $20. Original price $100. They were having a huge clearance sale.

1 gb of ram is good man. I have 512 and I'm able to run half-life well..hmm weird.

As I said, that's definately not the reason it's crashing.

For that matter, what's Veger's? (hey, I'm curious. LEAVE ME ALONE!) Ah well. I don't shop at CompUSA anyway (with my being in Canada and all).

Shopping at CompUSA is like buying hamburger in India. You just don't do it.

Hahaha Yoshi. That's often true but occasionally they do have good deals.

This thread reminds me of when I was building a computer back in 2001. The guy at CompUSA said I needed at LEAST a 400 watt power supply because my 1.4 GHz Athlon used 300 watts alone. Hahahaha.

Unless you're talking about the people in business sales, who actually know what they are talking about.

Such as me.

Well I doubt anyone here is going to go shopping in business sales. They're going to go shopping in "El Retardo Section A" with the minimum wage mendicants that think a CPU is the entire computer you use.

Most stores have the business sales reps out on the floor as well. Just look for the ones with ties on and not the red shirts.

For crying out loud people.

I work in the Camera/cellphone/printer department.

/ PDA / GPS / Bluetooth Headset / other stuff [/edit]

And the issue isn't whether mroe RAM will prevent it from crashing or not.
The issue is whether faster RAM off newegg or something would have a noticeable performance difference in comparison to slower RAM.

It still depends on your motherboard.
