24 Hour Fitness Promotion...good deal?

So tell me what you think.

24 Hour fitness has a plan where you pay for the next 2 years, and get a third year for free. In other words, you pay for 3 years in advance. On top of that, every additional year is 49.99. So I paid 699.82 for the next three years, where I was paying 23.something a month beforehand.

Rough math:
24.00 * 12 * 3 = 864ish. So I roughly saved $150 bucks by paying in advance. + I only pay 50 bucks every year after the next 3 years.

There are varying plans, one was for 599 + 99 every additional year (ended 2 months ago)

Another was 649.99 for 49.99 every additional year (I think) and it didn't include the bigger "sport" fitnesses, with the basketball court and swimming pool. I usually go to the sport ones so I paid the extra 50 bucks.

So I'm down 700 bucks. I had 2100, I spent 100 on RAM and 700 on 24 hour fitness, which leaves me with 1300 in the bank.
I was really nervous hwen I bought htis because I could have sworn I'd heard it was only like 300 or 400 bucks...and it ended out being almost 2x as much.
However, I called my friend and he assured me he paid the older 599 plan.

In your opinions was it worth it?

The question here is whether or not you will actually use the gym for three years. In this case, if you prepay and bail out after a couple of months, six months, a year, you're screwed.

No. I don't think it was worth it.

I don't think gym memberships are worth it.

If you were serious about being in shape you'd find a physically demanding job, or make a life time commitment and buy some equipment of your own.

I've been going at least once a week for the last 4 years. Usually it's more like 3-4 times a week.

I just really think that only paying 50 dollars a year for the rest of my life is a sweet deal (starting 3 years from now).

Yeah, I agree with Rob...
Well, if you want to build muscle and endurance you should sign up for a hardcore fighting class.

I've tried Bowflex before and it is some awesome workout equipment, but pricey.

Staying in shape is more fun when it's actually fun. Like, by being an athlete. Or playing pickup basketball or something. I can't stand exercising for the sake of exercising.

And hardcore fighting class? What the hell?

Of course, the main attraction is all the equipment. I guess it depends on what you're going to use the gym for. Like they say, if you don't go that often, it's a waste of money. If you go every other day, good deal.

It all depends on your personality and lifestyle as well as the gym and atmosphere. Some people are very successful at gyms and have a blast. The gym that I used to belong to had rock climbing, martial arts (Tae Kwon Do & Jiu Jitsu), Yoga, racket ball, basketball, and all of the other usual stuff. I know it's difficult for some people to believe, but some of us work 55-60 hours a week and there's little to no sunlight left by the time we get out of work every day, so a gym is a nice alternative.

If you're sure you're going to keep going to the gym and you'll be saving money in the long run, go for it. Just remember that gyms offer discounts and incentives on memberships, because they realize that like 1/4 of the people that sign up each year will stop coming after a month or two.

I got my Gym equipment for FREE and I use it every other day in the basement.

My mom got it from some site where people come together and want to get rid of things so they offer up stuff for free. No clue what the site is though and its too early to ask her.

I keep reading this thread's title as "24 Hour Witness Protection... good deal?"

Kinda annoying.

I only paid 700 dollars for witness protection, why wouldn't it be good deal?
