So Chavez's basically a dictator now...

...at least for the next 18 months, and all the major news networks are reporting more important things, like Miss USA did coke, ATHF "bomb threat", and some island where women propose to men and the men can't refuse. Thank you major U.S. news outlets, I'm glad you're on top of things.

Aparently all USA missionaries from every christian religion had to leave Venezuela a while ago. He threatened to kill them because of an american evangelical preacher who talked about killing chavez to free the country or something like that.

The working theory is that the hambeasts beat up the little ones in an effort to propose to the attractive males first.

That way, all of the attractive women are left for the less-attractive happydud. They'd have no choice, really.

Correct me if I'm wrong (and I very well may be,) but wasn't Chavez elected [several times] by a majority?

Their congress gave him this new power. They voted for him to be all-ruling.

It's a close race for best line in the prequels between that one and Obi-Wan's spectacularly deadpan "Good job" in Episode II.

Neither Bush nor Chavez have the facial hair to be proper dictators.

Our system is too much of a checks and balances system to allow it to become a dictatorship. People have a certain perception about what should be allowed and shouldn't, and they will push the gov't when it screws up.
Plus there's the supreme court, which can say if something's constitutional or not on Bush's part (wiretapping anyone?).

I'm not saying the system is perfect, but American's are educated enough to know that giving absolute power to one person (lots of power is one thing, absolute another), isn't going to happen.

What is to stopping me from putting my own cronies in the supreme court? Remember, the president appoints justices. Yes the Senate confirms but if I have a senate filled with people who support me, then I have cronies for life.

Moral of the post: A dictatorship can arise anywhere. If I had the time, $$, and craftiness, well just call me Emperor Cline of the American Empire!

So I just returned from Cuba a couple of weeks ago and I'd heard talk about how Chaves is friends with Fidel. I was wondering if any of you have any insite as to how this new development with Chaves might affect Cuba?

... If you want to know more about Cuba I can maybe start a new thread about my trip.

I honestly can't think of a reason why it would affect Cuba. Chavez already had the support of everyone in his government before this and did basically what he wanted. This just now makes what he does "legal."
Life is beautiful.

Yes, but there is the worry that our bureaucracy becomes a sentient being that destroys the world.
