Anyone use any CAD programs that you can recommend me to use?

I am looking something cheap or any free software I can find online. (I've looked on wikipedia, but I don't know which is best to use.)

I'm really short on money.:(

CAD would be kind of useless to you.

Unless you're an engineer, aspire to be one, like math a ****-ton, or want to program CNC I can't see the point in learning CAD.

Stick with modeling.
2007-02-03, 12:39 AM #3
Yeah, CAD isn't for modeling. It wouldn't be anywhere near as time efficient. If you want to do modeling for free, check out Blender.

I use program called SolidWorks which handles a large range of industrial designing.

But yeah. Why would you need CAD?

If you need to draw 3D parts, go for solidworks. If you are doing 2D general arrangements go for AutoCAD LT.

But yes, tell us what you intend to use it for and we can help you. :)

I can't say I've used Solidworks but I quite like Autodesk Inventor for industrial parts, although I'll admit I don't have much to compare it against.

But aye, if it's just 2D stuff, I suggest forking out for AutoCAD LT.
nope.

SolidWorks is the freaking business mate. I suspect Autodesk Inventor is very very similar (and very good, and very similar to AutoCAD which is a very good thing too). It's got these nifty little features like being able to set up formulae for certain dims - say a root radius of a rolled steel section. It means if you change certain things, you can make loads of other things update parametrically - it's a bloody godsend sometimes.

Inventor also can do parametric modeling, that's what I use at work.

I thought it might do - Autodesk products are generally very well put together.
2007-02-03, 12:53 PM #10
Well, I use Blender for my physics demonstrations and I am planning on majoring in ME in college.

I am no where near even being able to afford any Autodesk products or Solidworks. Really broke here. I have to work for anything I want and not need.

The thing that sucks is that I don't know anyone that has Autodesk products or any other CAD programs. Most of my friends are either skating or programming.

Gawd. This is one sweet animation made by Autodesk Inventor.

Well, the student edition of Solidworks goes around $80.

I think I will buy the one with COSMOS from here. It's only 140.

Hmm.. seems kind of fishy.

I was tempted to join but then I thought again..FREE AUTODESK DOWNLOADS?

Is that site trusty?

That radial engine was cool.

I've always wanted a car with a radial engine. I have no idea how that would work though..
2007-02-03, 9:03 PM #18
Wouldn't your car fly?

This is why you don't need to be learning CAD.

Wait what? Radial engines are used in those planes.

I'm trying to learn CAD so I can...wait I'm confused here.

Uh, it's on Autodesk's website. Yes.

A helicopter engine was used in a motorcycle, and it doesn't fly.

You don't need to be learning cad. It won't do you any good, it's fairly obvious.

Rob FYI I don't know anything about engines and I just happened to know from my physics class that Radial engines are used in some types of airplanes.

Please don't be a douche and tell me what I should and shouldn't be learning, since you don't even know me.

You don't even have a basic grasp over what the program is USED FOR. Or of related concepts.

It will do you NO GOOD.

If being a douche is being honest, FAIR ENOUGH.

Sigh... I know what CAD is used for. The name explains it.

I simply made this thread to find out some good CAD programs that aren't too expensive or free and not to argue with you Rob.

And I told you why you don't NEED to buy one or USE one or LEARN one.

It is not worth arguing online.

It must be tough not to be able to delete threads with outcomes you don't agree with.

I don't mind arguing with you Rob, just too tired and frustrated with other stuff.
