Worth upgrading?
2007-02-05, 10:08 AM #1
Hi,
I'm considering upgrading my computer. I don't have loads of money.. really I just want to be able to play Oblivion and Battlefield 2 better.

My current specs:

AMD XP2800+ Barton
1gb PC3200 DDR
Radeon 9800 Pro

My budget is about £200-£250.

I'm considering upgrading to a Sapphire x1950 512mb AGP and adding another GB of RAM.

Will I see enough of a performance increase for this to be worthwhile or will my CPU cause a bottleneck?

Thanks.

Couldnt say about bottleneck or increases as I dont know your motherboard specs or hard disk. But Oblivion still isnt smooth for me with 4GB of ram...

Your graphics card is probably the main bottleneck.

My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-7N400-L and my hard drives are just ATA133 IDE drives.. but I dont get the stuttering in oblivion that others talk about I just get a consistently low FPS (15-25 in most areas at 1024x768)

Your CPU will definatly cause a bottle-neck in Oblivion.

That's what I thought, unfortunately I don't have the money to buy a motherboard, processor and graphics card.

Thats because Windows XP apparently will only use 2gb of ram.

I think Oblivion multi-threads. Either way it runs smoother than glass on my system.

WTF? I have an AMD XP 1800 with less memory than you and the same graphics card. Oblivion and BF2 both run really well.

They run ok, but not great. I'd like them to run better and enable some of the more advanced graphics options.

You should save a little more and upgrade to an xbox 360.

I also have an AMD FX52 and radeon 1900 and 4GBs of ram doesnt help oblivion.

Ideally I'd chuck the old IDE HD and switch to an S-ATA for a considerable speed increase but thats past the scope of your funds.

Except Battlefield 2 : Modern Combat on Xbox 360 != Battlefield 2. At all.

And also pay for the games again? No thanks.

That will make less difference than upgrading the graphics card and I don't have money to upgrade both.

Uh, what? You'd see hardly any increase from that.

You need a complete overhaul before a 350-400 dollar upgrade on your video card.
