I bet they're actually rifles right :v: :v: :v:

I think you're going to need a lot more than 45w to get through steel. Those industrial lasers have huge PSUs.

Possibly. 100 watt CO2 lasers are used for sheet metal and, I think, thicker materials. 45 would probably work with a little time. Then again CO2 lasers may be more tightly focused, I'm not sure about ups and downs of physical lasing mediums vs diodes.

Nevertheless you could do some serious damage with it.

That's what them techy guys call them. I just call them multiphased plasma bolt arrays though.
VTEC just kicked in, yo!

EBW is like 100 times cooler than laser cutting anyways.

Here's a 4W laser diode

Kind of expensive for my tastes.

Kyle, what kind of optics/lenses did you get with it?

Absolutely none. It's fiber-coupled, so it has a couple inches of fiber optics sticking out of it. But it's not focussed at all; you have to be right up next to the surface to burn it.

Well that doesn't sound like any god damn fun at all. :(

I see. I assume that you're driving it with some sort of regulated benchtop power supply?

If by "regulated benchtop power supply" you mean "2 D-size batteries", then yes. :P

Why would you need an expensive benchtop supply to power a laser diode? I can't imagine it being very finicky. I think Ric_Olie just wants to sound smart. ;)

Well probably it doesn't like a lot of voltage fluctuations or spikes and stuff like that; thankfully batteries are a pretty reliable source for clean voltage.
