I downloaded iTunes as I'm thinking of getting an iPod and while adding my music to my library, I accidentally lost all the file info I had. I tried to uninstall/reinstall but that didn't work. Is there a way to get my info back or update it correctly through iTunes?

what do you mean by info? ID3 tags?
I had a blog. It sucked.

Yes, ID3 info. I highlighted all the songs, right-clicked, and clicked on Get Info. Cleared everything out, which I wasn't expecting.

When I try to the Get CD Track Names, it tells me to import the song using iTunes. When I did that, it told me the same thing.

are you selecting it in your media library or CD still?

That's a little inappropriately named. "Get Info" shows the ID3 tags that you've put in yourself, it doesn't look up the information for each song. What I expect you've done is, after highlighting all the songs and selecting "Get Info", a new box pops up with a bunch of empty fields labelled "Track Number", "Album Artist", etc. I imagine you checked a bunch of these boxes and clicked OK? Thereby accidentally blanking out all of the information for each individual song. I'm not entirely sure how you'd get it back to be honest, short of typing it all in yourself =/

Amarok uses a program called Musicbrainz to get the info for unknown songs. Though I don't know if it's available as a stand-alone program for Windows.

I think there's also an option under Advanced that says "Get CD Track Names" which has always worked for me. It just accesses the CBDD database.

Zloc - I imported the songs from a folder on my computer, so I'm selecting the songs only in the media library. The files in the original folder all seem to have their ID3 information intact.

Livid - yes, that's exactly what I did

Impi - I used the standalone version of MusicBrainz to get all my file info in the first place, but it doesn't seem to have been deleted from the actual file, just in iTunes

Schming - I tried Get CD Track Names but it told me I had to import the files with iTunes (which I am), so I re-import them and try again only to get the same message

Any more ideas? I'd like to know why the Get CD Track Names option isn't working.

try deleting all the songs and re-adding them.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

I did that. Highlighted them and clicked delete. Is there a more permanent way to delete them from iTunes? It only seems to stop them from showing in the library, because when I add them back they are just like before, no info.

Reinstall iTunes?

Um. You cleared out all your mp3's id3 tags. Try and open one in winamp. It won't be named there either.
2007-02-09, 5:42 PM #15
Greenboy - I did that 4 times now :(

Vincent - I'll try that, but I looked at the file's properties in windows and all info is there. That's still ID3 info so I'm thinking that it will still show in winamp.

Not completely on topic, but I've noticed recently while streaming my music to my 360, that iTunes does a rather crappy job at tagging files occasionally. Something that LOOKS tagged in iTunes, will, in fact, not have any tagging information at all. Something that both the 360 and Winamp uncover.

Keep in mind... occasionally in this case = about 15 files out of over 20,000.

Yes. I really am that pathetic and looked at EVERY single song I have on the 360 after I noticed one was mistagged. It took an hour and a half.

Nevermind, I uninstalled iTunes and I've decided that if iTunes doesn't work properly I don't want an iPod either. Dumb Apple.

Except it was your retarded move that deleted everything, not iTunes. It seems that the millions of other people that have an iPod around the world probably would agree with me.

Btw, Winamp also works with the iPod. Really well, in fact.

iTunes works very well for large collections of music.

Indeed. I wouldn't trade it for any other program. Been using it since it was first released for Windows.

I find Winamp does a helluva better job (And faster), and WMP rips CDs just fine.

And at least Winamp won't let you just wipe your ID3 tags randomly :p

Problem is I don't like the way Winamp is set up, and I loathe WMP and try to never ever use it. I won't even download a file encoded with Windows Media if there's an alternative.

I don't see any reason to hate a program when it does it's job.

WMP does it's job when ripping. I slap a CD in, it automatically opens, rips the CD with the track data to my music folder, and closes. And it rips to MP3, not WMA.

So does iTunes. And iTunes has never randomly wiped all my ID3 data.

What did I say? It might do it's job, but I don't like the way it does it. Thus I hate it.

As for WMP, I've had bad experiences with it ripping music (giving me corrupted files), I loathe it's interface, despise how it manages music and video. I hate it. If I could keep it from ever being installed in the first place I would.

My retarded move for deleting everything, iTunes retarded move for not letting me fix my library easily. The program is supposed to work a certain way and wouldn't.

It wasn't random, I did it. My problem started when it wouldn't let me reload the files in the library so I could get the ID3 data back like it's supposed to.
