not sure if this has been addressed yet, since I've been getting the warnings for a while, but it seems AVG will be stopping it's free edition soon. since I'm incredibly cheap, I was wondering what other free anti-virus software is out there that people would recommend.

also, a friend of mine recently got a mac laptop, and has appointed me to show her how to use it and the intarweb (despite me having virtually zero experience with macs). as far as I understand, there's far less risk with macs as almost all viruses are designed to infect computers running windows, but if there are any free anti-virus programs for macs out there, I'd appreciate getting some names

thanking you muchly

Just download version 7.5 of AVG, it's still free.

In the last two years the increase in infections has been relating to spyware rather than viruses, AVG Free (including the 7.5 edition) does not detect spyware. However, Grisoft does provide a free version of AVG Anti-Spyware - based upon the former Ewido engine.

I don't know why they can't just have the program automatically update to 7.5, my guess is they're hoping to scare people into buying the full version.

Avast is a pretty decent free anti-virus.

I have to admit to not having an anti-virus app for my mac - I just use common sense browsing and email filtering.

I use Avast - it's free and seems to work fine. No complaints here. Then again, I've never tested it...so... :psyduck:

You just have to install the new version, the support is just going for that version not the entire free program.

that sounds pretty safe for you or I, but I'm concerned that my friend may not be so savvy. do you know any other mac users who use one? I know you all hang out together, plotting to take over us normal people... :P

Aren't most virus scanners on OSX and Linux used to filter for Windows PCs?
