Ok so after dropping WIN2000 like a bad banana i went cleaning up the peices when i found something strange.
Under a folder named Searchtoolbarcorp there are 12 gigs [Be mindfull that my HD is a 6 gig] of wierd files that can't be deleting.

What the hell do i do?

Maybe you'd best go back to Win98SE, this one doesn't suit you. Regardless, it sounds like spyware. Try a command-line delete?

After you delete those 12 GB of weird files, I bet your HD will magically be 18 GB! It's certainly worth it to find a way to delete them.

Stranger things have happened, after all. Like somebody going back from Win2000 to Win98SE. If that can happen, then anything can!

One of my computers uses windows ME. I decided it would be cool to go to 2000. It borked up my system and I ended up going back to ME. Maybe I should have mentioned this before you installed it. In any case, just clean out the remains of 2000 and you should be fine.
My blawgh.

But how do i delete these files? Windows says it can't because of the names [Some odd chinese characters] and i can't rename them.

I don't know if it's sad or idiotic that two people prefer 98SE and ME respectively over 2k. It's BETTER in every respect. If you had a problem with it after a CLEAN install (ie: wipe the drive and install) It's very likely NOT the system's fault and your stupidity.

I upgraded three computers from ME to 2k. You know what happened? They suddenly became usable.

Try deleting them through the command prompt. Use Process Explorer (google for it) to see if the files are open in any running programs; that would prevent them from being deleted.

I can't stop laughing that he actually DOWNGRADED back to Win98 after having Win2k installed.

Seriously Tiberium, you should just give up on PCs altogether, my grandmother does a better job of using em. :/ It's just sad anymore.

Heh...of course it's not Win2k's fault -- last I checked, even Microsoft doesn't install a folder called "Searchtoolbarcorp"... :P

I would just suggest getting a new damn computer, even if such an advice wouldn't be helpful in this situation. I mean, there is probably a point where you can do only so much to help a crappy, outdated computer be less of a crappy, outdated computer. With only 6 gigs of space and riddled with malware/problems, the computer probably has taken enough abuse.

Actually if I've been following this whole melodrama correctly....

He acquires a "free" copy of Win2k
He installs said copy on a supposedly clean drive
He claims said copy has issues
He then reinstalls Win98SE
He now claims problems with left over files from 2k in 98SE

.... Windows won't LET YOU install 98SE over 2k. Not from inside the system at least, and this is the ONLY way he'd still have problems with crap from 2k.

.... I don't think I even want to continue trying to figure out what the hell he did... It's just not worth it unless there's a large sum of money involved.

Maybe he "backed up" windows 98, and is now copy pasting it into his 2k windows folder. :v:

He shouldn't be allowed anywhere NEAR a new computer.

And yeah, there's only so much you can do, but I've done quite alot to old decrepit machines before. I have a 90Mhz Gateway2000 doubling as a nightstand right now. I dug around and managed to double the RAM. It only had something like 32 mb before hand. I added a second harddrive. Ghetto style. It was roped in with rubber bands on a piece of cardboard since there wasn't another drive tray. Primary drive was 500 mb, second was a gig. Gave it a newer network card that was laying about and a modem. Gave it a newer CD drive. 48X over it's retarded 8X. Installed 98SE over NT4.

The computer overall wasn't useful for much more than really REALLY weak web browsing and text entry, but I managed to make that ******* run Photoshop 5.5 marginally well, as long as you were willing to wait, made it run JK at the crappy graphics level, had it doubling as a streaming platform for my music.... and I can't remember ever getting a BSOD. I'm sure it happened... but I can't remember it.

So yes... It wasn't a super computer by any stretch, but I did better with it than what he's doing to his.
