I'm following this tutorial to set up a Steam server (for the LAN only - my poor 3 Mb/256kb connection can't handle I-net games), and I'm having an...interesting time.

Code:
<me>@<boxname>:/media/hda3/steam$ sudo ./hldsupdatetool.bin
-bash: ./hldsupdatetool.bin: Permission denied

Yes, I can sudo. Yes, the directory, binary, and mount point have execute permissions. This is under Kubuntu, and no longer Fedora.

Any ideas?

The user that is running hldsupdatetool.bin needs to have write permissions to the HLDS data.

Your connection can handle internet games just fine--I used to be on that and got 40-60 pings on good servers.

Yes joining games will be fine but a server for more than 4 or 5 players will need a better upload bandwidth.

The directory and binary has rwx for myself (the owner), and I've tried rwx for all, and it still denies me permission. :saddowns:

Do:

chattr -ia files.ext

They might've added special no write attributes on it, which this will remove.

Not that bad--at worst he'd get 70-80-ish pings.

Until it goes above that, in which point his ping would scale exponentially.
