Keyboard problem
2004-07-11, 11:32 AM #1
Yeah, see I bought this very nice office keyboard, its black and matches my PC.

The only issue is that it has extra hotkeys, and has assigned some functions to the F keys, like F6 is spellcheck, F3 is open, etc, and Print screen is print.

Now, apparently in games, and in windows. It ignores the usual function of the key, and does what its labeled as.

This is annoying in games because if I bind a function to the key, it does something completley diffrent. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/mad.gif]

So, does anyone happen to know a way to reset these keys to their default function? I really miss using prntscreen to take screenshots. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

(Yes, I know this isn't the techincal forum, I didn't feel this was technical enough to be put there, as it might be an issue the average person would understand and possibly be able to help with. If I'm wrong, then please move it to the tech forum, thanks.)

What kind of keyboard is it? I have a one of the nice microsoft keyboards, and it has those obnoxious "function" keys too, but their is an "F-Lock" key for enabling/disabling the functions on the F keys. Their is also a registry edit I have for disabling them too, but I doubt it would work for you unless the board is a similar microsoft one.

Why doesn't anyone make a simple NORMAL keyboard any more? Seriously, I've been looking for one for awhile now to go with my new system, and they all either have loads of "multimedia keys" that I'll never use, that stupid F-Lock thing, or they've rearranged the keys in some oddball fashion.

Knowing Massassi, I'll be provided with a link to a site that sells such a keyboard shortly...

/me huggles winamp

Using the stupid useless "WWW" "MAIL" and "SEARCH" buttons on my keyboard, located right above the arrow keys, I have rebound them in Winamp to "Previous Track" "Pause/Play" and "Next Track". Fun music, right at my fingertips, even during gameplay [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

Exactly, I could live with extra buttons like that. It's all the rest of these stupid buttons that I hate.

GBK has the right idea about my layout issue, everyone seems to want to differ from that layout right there.

I did find an older Logitech keyboard at NewEgg a few months ago, but it was out of stock. I guess I should go check up on it again. I just find it absurd that it's this hard to find a decent normal keyboard from a major brand.

Brian made a post a while back about mechanical clickey keyboards. I don't remember if it was here or on Evil Magic though...

I do remember they were ridiculously expensive for keyboards.

Mine has a bunch of useless buttons I'll never use too, but the multimedia controls bound to Winamp are fantastic.

There are registry edits to basically "reverse" the F-lock key.

I just stick with my plain $15 MS keyboard though. Places still sell them luckily. Does have those few extra buttons, but they're all out of the way and don't hinder the traditional layout any.

I don't like the myriad of buttons perched on the top of my keyboard, but it's so hard to find a keyboard without them on...

Some are useful, though. Not many, but some.

Ive been lucky... When I was in college, the bank a fellow student worked for threw out a bunch of stuff, including a huge *** pile of "used" keyboards. Some of them are in mint condition, and all of them are PS/2 104-key. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

I had this extreamly simple keyboard before this one, and was quite happy. But I spilled water on it...

I got this 'cause it was black, and sleek and sexy. The Logitech one was more expensive and out of our budget, the cheaper simpler one was white.

Oh well, Anyways, how do I rebind keys? I'd love to make those media keys work in winamp. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

The HP keyboard that came with the last PC we purchased and ran WinME *shudder* had a utility in the control panels that would let you rebind keys. Since I dumped WinME for 2k, however, this function has gone away. Not that it really matters, everything I need is in the Quicklaunch, and I use iTunes instead of Winamp and don't play music when gaming online.

I love my standard 104 key keyboards. I will accept and use nothing with more than 104 keys.

I've been working on designs to graft the wireless aspect of a wireless multimedia keyboard (because they don't make wireless 104's) to a standard keyboard..

Many Bothans died for this information.

Ober: this is assuming you are using Winamp5...

Launch Winamp. Go to preferences (Ctrl+P).

Click Global Hotkeys. Check the Enabled box. Click an action, then down at the bottom, click on the hotkey box. Press the key you wish to set, and hit Set. Bam, your done. You can do any combo, including Ctrl+Alt+Shift+F1, whatever works for you.

The best thing about this, is this works in any program, even in Fullscreen games. You can be playing JA to your hearts content, and hit a hotkey to change to the next song. Because of this, you can control your playlist, and pause during gameplay (if the phone rings, for example). I never have the need to close Winamp anymore, so I haven't, in over 3 weeks.

You didn't read. I don't miss it and don't need it. Hell, I hardly used them to begin with. I use four of the 21 multimedia keys. The mute button, the volume up/down buttons, and the standby key.

I've just got a laptop, and I'm about used to the layout (it's actually pretty good apart from the Del key is in a wierd place), but since the font of all knowledges appear to be in good form, I was wondering if anyones knows if you could buy a cheap num pad on its own? I've seen new keyboards that have them seperate, but they come bundled with the keyboard.

If that makes any sense.
