So this past Saturday, I ordered AT&T Yahoo DSL for my house. Currently we have Road Runner. The DSL activated today, so I fired it up and played around. After a little snafu with a phone that we didn't know was plugged in (and likewise, didn't have a filter on it, so it was messing up the DSL), I got it up and running and started running speed tests and generally trying to get a feel of it. So, help me decide, here are the factors.

As far as ping goes, it's slightly better on the DSL side. In the same game server, roughly 5-10 minutes apart, same amount of people, the DSL was lower and didn't shift as much. The cable would shift higher at the beginning of rounds because of the number of people alive in the beginning. DSL ping was anywhere from 20-30 ms, cable was 30-45 ms. (DSL upstream is ~650k, cable upstream is ~350k)

Downstream is where the big difference is. RR is rated for 5 mbps, and in speed tests I get about 4.8 mbps. The DSL, however, is rated for 6 mbps, but I only receive about 3.8 mbps, and that tends to vary. I happen to know that to be able to even sign up for the highest speed package, you have to be within 8,000 ft of the dialing center, and our house is barely within that, so that would probably be why.

Other than that, the AT&T Yahoo is supposed to have a lot of extra user features and stuff, none of which I think we will use though. Both me and my mom have moved off the RR email accounts and onto Gmail, so email size makes no difference to me. Hardware wise, and I know this is probably meaningless, but the DSL modem doesn't look all that high-quality, I guess you would say. The cable modem, in comparison, seems much more robust and solid. In addition, where as the cable modem connects great through the router in a matter of seconds, I still cannot get the DSL modem to work with it at all.

As far as cost goes, the DSL is $10 cheaper per month. Right now, I'm leaning towards keeping the RR, but only if they can let us have the promotional $29/month deal for a year that new customers get.

Any comments?
