Well for where I live, there are the County Sherrifs and the City Police. We live in an unincorporated area, so Sherrifs are the ones who do all the stuff. And then there are the State Troopers, who drive their ATVs behind our neighborhood to look for stuff.

Didn't wear a helmet while biking. Passed a cop. Didn't get a ticket.

City/Town Police/Marshalls < County Sheriffs Unit < State Police/Highway Patrol

In the United States this is how every state does their business. City police take care of everything in their city limits, County does the entire county outside the limits, and State does crimes involving more than one county and major highways.

Minor exceptions to the rule I'm sure but this is the usual operating procedure.

*Edit* As far as titles go...Town would be Marshall's, City are Officers/Patrolman, County is Deputies (Unless you are talking to the actual Sheriff, there is only one guy called the Sheriff), and State is usually Trooper or Officer.

Truth. Where I come from, it's common to say "It's the Sherrif" when you see a patrol car that says county sherrif on it, even if it isn't Sherrif Kennard.

The only time I can remember breaking the law unintentionally was the time when came to a full stop when I was trying to make a right turn off of the long highway onto another street where there was NO STOP SIGN PRESENT. My driving instructor got pissed and scolded me quite harshly since there were cars behind us at the time and I could had caused a serious car accident.

In the fall, I used a coin-operated parking meter one day on campus. You could in put as much money as you wanted, but it would only give you 3 hours of time. I needed more than that, so I figured I'd come back and move my car before it expired.

Well, I forgot about it until the end of the day as I was walking to my car. When I realized my meter had expired, I panicked and was totally expecting to see one of those bright orange parking tickets on my windshield. As I was approaching my car from far off, I could see bright orange on my driver side wiper blade, but when I got there, it turns out it was only a leaf that had fallen on my car! Apparently they were only patrolling during the morning when I still had time left on my meter... :)

Oh...I just realized...I have broken the law unintentionally

One day I got a parking ticket in the city. I didn't pay it. The End.

It will never affect me because the law states you have to pay $10 for the ticket ($20 if you're two weeks late paying), BUT there is NO penalty for not ever paying.
