Websense, AIM, and ports

The girls dorms at my school use Websense to block internet browsing after 11:00. Thing is though, if they're still logged into AIM after the cutoff, they can stay online all night.

So then, could I toss around some settings in Firefox on the girls' computers to make them use port 5190 (the port AIM uses) instead of 80, or would I have to set up an outside proxy or something for that?

Sorry that I'm not giving an answer, but I can help wondering why would they block college kids from using the internet at night?

You'll need a proxy for that.
Port 80 is the port where webservers listen on. You can't just connect to a different one (unless of course the webserver is set up to listen on another port).

It's a well-documented fact that girls surf for porn late at night.

And what's wrong with AIM...?

well its just not generally used anywhere in the world but america...Which makes sense seeming its an american online product. So, I dont know why he's lol'ing other than the fact that most americans dont communicate with people outside of their country via msn (what everyone else uses).

I myself hate using AIM because it wont hold a steady connection to my internet. it logs me on and off every minute or so, so my american friends just have to call me if they dont have msn.

Sounds like the best solution is to keep them logged into AIM.

However it may work for ANY connection... so any app that will keep a constant connection (and where you can get a good reliable connection) may work.

IRC might be reliable enough for this. VPN/Proxy software would be, too (Hamachi, OpenVPN, Tor, etc).

It's probably because they found out that when they shut off the males' internet, they have to change the sheets much more often in the mornings.

I should have been more clear, when they stay logged into AIM they can only keep their AIM connection; port 80 is still blocked.

Does your high school have wifi?

Mine does and its public.

One of our two campuses has wifi, but it's an interesting situation. Up until this year wifi had a key that everyone knew, but now it's got a different one that the IT department pre-installs on the teachers' laptops, so the wifi is completely private to only a certain set of Novell-infested thinkpads. The girls' dorms are on the campus without wifi anyway.
