Windows will not start, even in safe mode
2007-02-20, 10:40 AM #1
I can't start my Windows XP MCE box. Every time I try, it gets to the Windows loading screen, then it turns off, restarts, and gives me this error message:
"We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this."
Then, my options to boot are:
Start in safe mode.
Safe mode with networking.
Safe mode with command prompt.
Last known good configuration setting (most recent setting that worked).
Start Windows normally.
I've tried what I can but Windows will not boot..

Has anyone had this problem before, and knows how to fix it?

P.S. The Sony F&*^ers didn't give me an XP disc, the put all the backup files on a HD partition.

Can you boot with a Knoppix CD/DVD?
Sorry for the lousy German

If you can't boot off of a Linux CD that means your computer is a HIGH-QUALITY AND FAILPROOF SONY PRODUCT MADE BY THE BRILLIANT MINDS AT SONY.

Borrow an XP cd from a friend (make sure it's the version you have a CD key for) or acquire one from the internets.

Failing that, you can try downloadnig and burning Knoppix and usnig it to check out the hidden partition.

I SWEAR by Knoppix. It saved me from a recent HD failure, IT IS AWESOME!

I had a similar problem not too long ago. It turned out the jumper on my hd had wiggled loose somehow. Shoved it all the way back on, and presto, it worked fine again.

Try going into Recovery Console on the XP CD and do chkdsk /r

Another copy of windows won't do any good. Those OEM machines come with a key that won't work with an ordinary windows install disc. I know. I've got an HP. It's got one of those dumb restore partitions as well, and no XP discs. Real pain in the ***, as it comes pre-loaded will sorts of useless **** that is only good for deleting.
Wikissassi sucks.

Those things should be standard-issue with all windows boxes. It will never happen, but still....
