Strange windows/IE problems
2004-07-15, 5:05 PM #1
Yeah, if anyone says anything about "omg windows sux" or "lol switch 2 linux!!", I'll rip yer balls off.

Anyways, so I've recently gotten my new computer. Everything's been working great, except for two small, unusual problems I've had. Number 1 is that, occasionally, IE simply won't work. It'll give me a "page cannot be displayed" error thinger, but I can connect to everything else fine (IRC, various net games, AIM, etc). It's usually fixed when I reboot, but rebooting every time it happens is too inconvenient. Anyone have any idea what might be causing this and/or how to fix it?

Second problem is, for some reason, MSPaint can only open/save BMP's. On my other comp, it could open and save as gif, jpg, bmp, etc. Both computers are Win2k Pro, and both are fully updated... Again, anyone know why that is and/or how to fix it?

Any help is appreciated, and thanks.

I had that same IE problem for awhile under the same OS. Really annoyed the hell out of me. I have no idea how to fix it or what causes it. But if I remember correctly, it was one of the prime reasons I moved to Firefox. I can't really help you anymore than that. As for Paint, I haven't a clue. I never use it. Even for mundane tasks I always go into Photoshop.

I haven't used paint for like half a year. Uh...you could save it as a .bmp, use Irfanview to open it then save it as a .jpg or .gif or whatever tickles your pickle.

As for IE, no idea. Best advice I can give is to use Firefox, whether or not you want to take it is up to you. Great browser though, worth at least a try.

I've had a similar problem before so this might help.

Open up Paint.
File --> Open
In the files of type box, select All Files
Select a Jpeg/gif and click Ok.
You should then be able to open/save in that format.

For some strange reason it seems as though Paint wont let you save a particular format unless you've opened a file with that format first.

I think it varies from version to version (MSPaint).
I think I have the version you do -- only bmps (and it also does gifs). This is in WinXP btw. MS Photo Editor makes up for the lack of save types (almost -- it's not very convenient to change programs just to save a file)
In Win98 at my school, MSPaint can save in all those other formats, but it doesn't come with PhotoEd.
