I just got a call from one of my friends at work.

CompUSA Announces Realignment Strategy

DALLAS, Feb. 27, 2007 - As part of its plan to realign the organization, CompUSA today announced a comprehensive strategy to improve the company's financial status. The realignment includes a cash infusion, store closures, major expense reductions and a corporate restructuring.

As part of CompUSA's realignment strategy, the company will receive a $440 million cash capital infusion. The financial boost will be designated to improve the company's balance sheet.

"Based on changing conditions in the consumer retail electronics market, the company identified the need to close and sell stores with low performance or non strategic, old store layouts and locations faced with market saturation. The process began last week with the closing of four CompUSA stores and over the next 60-90 days, the company will close a total of 126 stores in the United States to focus on initiatives that enhance its top performing locations," said Roman Ross, chief executive officer, CompUSA.

CompUSA will continue to offer products and services at 1-800-CompUSA and online at compusa.com, providing more than 80,000 items for consumers and small and medium businesses, along with top-notch technical service from CompUSA TechPro.

Today's announcement allows the company to focus its efforts and ensure a strong presence in its 103 stores in 39 states and Puerto Rico.

Basically, the closest store in my area (orange county, CA) will be in bakersfield, over 100 miles away.

I guess I should look for another job.

... luckily I was planning on quitting next week so I could focus on school, lmao.
perfect timing.

I'm going to try to stay so I can get severence.

Never really thought too highly of CompUSA, maybe because they're always loads of better places around my area, Fry's being one of them.
<Lyme> I got Fight Club for 6.98 at walmart.

No Fry's in NY. Or anyplace comparable. Their "specialty" stores are best buy and comp USA. Ugh; I've been doing all my component shopping online now that I'm on the East Coast.

I always liked CompUSA. The one's I've been to have always had that trashy, 80s tech store feel...

And they always have great Black Friday deals.

No Fry's anywhere near me. :(

They couldn't compete with Fry's, so they closed any stores that had a Fry's near by. I've been hearing about this for weeks. My store is staying open though.

Sorry to hear about yours closing, are they giving you any kind of severance pay?

From what one of my friends tells me, they should.
I haven't heard any official word from anyone that works there though, my next work day is Friday.

Our store was apparently # 20 in the company, but I think they decided to close it because of the local competition (possibly old store design too? hard to say, they just re-did our Home Electronics (TV) section. Best Buy is literally in the same shopping complex as us, There's more best buys locally, Wal-mart, circuit city, fry's is 30 minutes away. That's probably why they're focusing on places like Bakersfield, where I doubt theres as much competition.

They will stay open for a while longer too while they get rid of inventory on hand. Which means a lot of lazy days for you and having to tell people all day "sorry we don't have any more of those"

I never seen a Fry's ever.

Best Buy isn't as bad as Circuit City in my opinion. I got few good deals at Best Buy.

Around here, best buy is actually the best buy. The local circuit city and comp usa are so far down the ladder they don't count.
Wikissassi sucks.

microcenter ftw.

though yeah, online shopping for components is much cheaper/efficient/better in almost every way.

Fry's is the best. Have you ever bought a 4 GB flash drive fro only $49.99 elsewhere?

ive had good luck with compUSA, i buy most of my components there. i got totally screwed by a circuit city around here, bought a new power supply wrapped and everything. open it up and its some old, dusty piece of junk. i went to return it and they weren't going to take it back. i make a ruckus and they finally gave me my money back, but im sure not buying any more components from there any more.

You like spending way too much for your stuff?

I refuse to shop at brick and mortars for anything other than games, blank media, and on black friday. Honestly, it's such a rip off it's not even funny.
