I believe his wtf was to his posts suddenly disappearing right after you posted in the thread, and your opinion doesn't seem like something he would go "wtf?" to.

I could be wrong though ;)
I had a blog. It sucked.

I hope there will be some documentation as to how much this program will be giving over how much time.

There are some awful charities out there that actually donate just 1 cent off of every dollar. If this is donating shamefully small amounts, then I hope it won't drive people away from supporting good charities. What I mean is like people thinking to themselves "Why should give actual dollars and cents when I'm helping the cause just by using this IM computer program? I'll just sit here and type"

Now, if Microsoft is donating great sums of cash from this, this is great.

This might be a gimmick... but the fact is, money is going to worthy causes. Does it really MATTER what MS' motivation is here? Not as much as the money matters to the causes, I bet.

If you're concerned about it being ridiculously small amounts, it's more than the 0 cents that was being donated before. And if you are concerned, you can always directly donate some amount yourself.

And to take the focus off Microsoft for 5 seconds, what about the Book IT program that encourages young people to read a lot? Sounds great, right? But there's more than one way to view it.

I remember that! I would read a book and get a free personal pan pizza!

I never had a problem getting motivated to read. I love to read. I also loved Pizza Hut pizza. So it all worked out nice for me... I'm afraid I can't say if it influenced me to prefer Pizza Hut pizza (I'm certain I already did). Actually I don't really have it often because there's none within walking distance and when I'm home we don't go 'cause Dad doesn't like it.

Did anyone else go through this program? What do YOU personally remember about it?

Giving 1% to charity is actually quite a lot.

It does? It sends messages (instantly!) to other people with the program installed. Sounds alright to me :D

I guess it jars less for me, since participating in this doesn't involve me switching clients. Just waiting for MS to start it up over here.

Oh, and go easy on JG. He has Massassi's best interests at heart. And he offers large sums of money as bribes.

I hate MSN messenger protocol in general, because it REQUIRES UPNP support on your firewall/router in order to have any sort of speed in file transfers (sometimes they don't even work at all). AIM doesn't have that problem at all.

So, it would be better not to give than give and have it benefit you? That's idiotic. What's wrong with the giving also benefiting them?

It's not about receiving something in return, it's about them expecting something in return. It's less of a donation and more of a complex trade.

Giving without thought of receiving.

Who knows, maybe I'm just too grounded in my catholic upbringing or something.

Bill Gates has personally done more charitable work than anybody else in human history, I'm pretty sure. He started a company to distribute his money and he is going to be working there full time by the end of the year. To give away his money. Full-time. I think he's only leaving his kids a few million dollars each.

IMHO I think he's earned himself a free pass for ruining the software industry.

Maybe if he earned the money rather than stealing it.

Yeah but he stole it from jerks like Steve Jobs.

Not to mention that's how most business works. Somebody comes up with an idea, and you take it and grow upon it. Just because he took an idea he didn't come up with on his own and got it to the market first doesn't make him a horrible person. It makes him a shrewd business man.

Talk about a vendetta?
Microsoft == Suck
Giving Money to Poor == Not Suck
[Microsoft is] giving money to poor == Not Suck

Just because Microsoft is a ****ty company doesn't mean their donations to charity are any less... good.

And let's not forget all the **** Apple has stolen over the years. They just don't get bad press because Microsoft is so much more successful.

I like Microsoft a lot more than I used to. I still don't like some decisions their execs make, though. For example, Steve Balmer is a prick, I think the company would be better off with someone more sensible in his place.

Microsoft has amazing engineers though. Even if you don't like them, they've done an incredible amount for computer and related technologies over the years. As of late they just keep getting better, too. The .NET framework is my favorite example. It is easily the best general purpose application development framework in existence for any platform. Even on Linux or OS X I would still use it through Mono. ASP.NET is amazing, too. The only trouble is that you don't get the full performance unless you run IIS. That in and of itself is not a problem since IIS6 is actually really, really good. The problem is that if you want a free solution, you're stuck with Apache and mod_mono, which is a good deal slower, although not a slug my any means.

About that "unfair" thing I mentioned earlier... You know, since Jabber people don't make any money, give you the server for free, they can't give this money to charity.

Perhaps someone should write/modify a messenger so it shows adds and gives the full sum of money to charity. That could be done by a plugin for gaim. I am not able to do that but I'd help with the organization if someone here decided to do so...
