I finally got a job

I've finally started working as a cashier at Publix, and in a few short days I've already become a slacker. Also, if you eat any damaged goods or day old baked goods that they're throwing out, it's considered employee theft. This is a stupid policy, and the only good reason i can think behind it is that it keeps associates from randomly dropping stuff whenever they get hungry.

So discuss Publix and ways that I can avoid doing actual work.

Volunteer to stock soda.

I liked it better than dealing with customers when I worked in a grocery store. Mostly because I worked in the spoiled part of Salt Lake. It was like Tetris because we had a small back room and I had to make the soda crates fit in as small a place as possible. I was the best one at it so they always had me do it and I didn't have to check unless it was really busy.

*chuckle*
I used to be customer service staff / FEC. I got paid to make slackers work...no sympathy from me. :D

Just do your job, man...it's what you're paid for. You can avoid doing actual work by quitting. :psyduck:

I can imagine they have that policy for health reasons. Seriously, if you're an employer, would you want one of your employees chowing down on something that's over a day old or damaged? Who knows what kind of germs may had grown in that stuff by the time someone eats it. I highly doubt the super market is willing to deal with lawsuits over the mess that could erupt from this scenario.

Works your *** off while you're there and save as much money as possible. Constantly apply for higher paying positions, and never pass up the opportunity for something that pays higher and has equal or greater benefits. Associate yourself with people that are higher up than you and who have friends that are higher up than them. Don't associate with slackers at work (you'll be surprised at how you'll be categorized with your slacker friends, despite your productivity).

Agreed -- if you have halfway decent managers, they'll notice hard work. You might wind up with 50c raises every 6mo instead of 20-25c...

Years ago, I started with Publix at $5.75/hr...ended up leaving at $8.75 -- had I stayed, I had a verbal guarantee of $9.50/hr at the next raise. That's not a lot...but it's a lot better than what we paid slacker cashiers. ;)

This is something to take into consideration. The only times I would have been slacking is the hour that i have to block from store close until I can go home, but I found out last night that I'm allowed to listen to my mp3 player while I do it, so no worries.

And my avoid doing work statement was aimed at being a playful remark. Thanks for flipping out, Rob. ;)

It's funny you say that -- I would think that associating with slackers during working hours would contribute less to your dignity than associating with people who actually care about their jobs.

But hey, what do I know, right? :psyduck:

Yeah, but it's publix. It's not like you have a lot to loose.

How does associating with people for the sole purpose of finacial gain contribute to your dignity?
