ForumsDiscussion Forum → New name for Patch Enforcer?
New name for Patch Enforcer?
2004-07-13, 8:30 AM #1
I'm thinking of adding DF, JO, and JA support to Patch Enforcer, my JK and MotS Patch Commander clone. I have already made a Dark Forces patch enforcer thingy for DOS... I'd just have to rewrite it for VB. JO and JA would be easy.

Also, I think that the name "Patch Enforcer" doesn't make much sense, since patches are used to fix bugs in games... and I can't figure out wtf I was thinking with Enforcer, other than it sounds kinda cool. I'm thinking something along the lines of "MOD Manager" or "MODtacular" or something with MOD in it.

Any ideas? Only requirements are that it must have the word/letters MOD in it... unless you think your idea is really, really good. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Although Patch Enforcer isn't a bad name in my opinion, even if they are mods. Ask Michael B. Klein (author of PC) why he named his "Patch Commander" that.

  • LoadaMOD
  • MODrunner
[*]MODman
(except it's already in use by another completely different program for updating existing mods with a patch)[*]MOD Enforcer[/list]

btw, are you going to make those other "plugin" programs for P.E. (the level (un)archiver, character editor, etc)? And is there going to be .zip file reading support?

How do you use it? The only thing I could figure out is copy your mod to the gamedata/base directory and run. Stupid manual didn't give any instructions on the built-in mod loader -- just said "can be used to load user-made modifications". Yeah... that helps a lot

You put the mods in their own folder in the gamedata directory. And more people know how to do that than know about Patch Enforcer. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

Heh, thanks Thrawn#'s.

[rant]
See, they thought it was so simple that it didn't need instructions. No directions in JO, none in STV:EF, and so probably none in JA.

GUNS don't need instructions. Pull the trigger -- bam, someone drops dead. That's the simple stuff. Everyone knows it.
[/rant]

But if MegaZ wants to put that support in PE, so be it -- the user can choose how to do it.

Well, for JO/JA, there are a few advantages to running it with a custom mod (which you do with the +fs_game MODNAME parameter or whatever, I gotta look it up). For example, the Dark Forces Mod demo has a cool intro, but you can only see it if you run it from the command line instead of selecting it ingame. And besides, having support for all 5 games provides a convenient launch point for all of them. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

I thought up the name MODerator before... I didn't like it. MODfather is funny, but I don't think it fits... I dunno. Maybe something like MODular...

Meh, I'll probably stick to something lame and easy, like MOD Manager. Thanks for the great suggestions guys! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]
