i just built a new pc.
athlon x2 64 4200+
1.25GB RAM
ati x1300 pro

now i need a new game. one of my irl friends has finally started gaming. he's done cod and cod2 and absolutely loved them. he couldn't believe how much he liked them 'cause 'video games are for nerds'.

anyway, his pc is also new and slightly better than mine. we need a fps that has a good sp and good mp. something along the same lines as cod (maybe splinter cell?).

any suggestions? has to be fairly new within the last 8 months or so. anything new coming in the next month or so?

Well, there's S.T.A.L.K.E.R coming up this month.

I'd recommend Prey (which was released last August, I think) because of its old-school gaming atmosphere, but it has a lot of repetitive architecture but at least you can shoot stuff. No idea about the multiplayer, though.

Command and Conquer 3 is coming out soon. Also Supreme Commander looks very impressive. Oh, and this doesn't really fit your requirements, but anyway, if you haven't played Republic Commando, then you definitely should.

(especially if you guys like CoD.)

Probably like HL2, plus CoD3 is out. Painkiller is fun, but the MP is lacking. Farcry has amazing SP, but I hate the MP. FEAR is also good.

It's the best game made in the past 3-4 years.

half-life 2 is pretty good, but not the best. FEAR is awesome, great SP. Prey is fun, but gets repetitive and boring after awhile.

I thought F.E.A.R was as repetitive as Prey, in the sense that FEAR had offices and warehouses after offices and warehouses whereas Prey had metal corridors and wallrectums after metal corridors and wallrectums.

Yet I would have recommended F.E.A.R if I hadn't read "has to be fairly new within the last 8 months or so". In fact, I don't remember any games from the past 8 months except for the ones released a few weeks back and Prey (and I have no idea if August 06 was 8 months ago or not).

oooo, i forgot. quake 4 is good too. i suppose for strictly MP ut2k4 is good.

Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II

F.E.A.R. is the best MP game that I've played since JK. I don't usually play SP in any game, so I can't really comment on that. I think Unreal I and Rune were the last SP games that I actually played through, besides JO/JA.

F.E.A.R. MP never did impress me much.

As for games, get Far Cry. Instincts is awesome too.

2142 is kind of lame. It feels like Battlefield 2 with a HUGE mod that causes it to be more instable than usual. But! Battlefield 2 is good fun, as is HL2 with CS:S... If you can find the HL2 holiday pack from this year, for the same price as you'll pay for most other games, you'll get HL:S, HL2, HL2: Ep1, and CS:S... It's $49.99 US.

Deus Ex is incredible. Ask FGR about the various graphical enhancement mods, he's up to date on them.
