Right so i was given a windows xp pro [SP1] disk from the same people that gave me the comp. I want to know want things i should do so it doesn't end in a catastrophy like when installed windows 2000.

Im downloading SP2 and putting it on a disk.

Install XP and SP2 without being plugged into the internet. Then once it's done, then plug it in.

Let me sum up this thread right now so nobody else has to reply and we can let this die

"My computer sucks"
"Windows XP sux I'm going back to 98"
"My computer sucks it runs WindowsXP too slow"
"I should commit suicide right now"

wait... you're going to install XP on that 500mhz POS?

Stick with Windows 2000.

You can put the SP2 files on a disc? Where are they saved when you download them? I want to put them on a disc too so I don't have to redownload the next time I format my hard drive.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

Kroko: You can go one better by slipstreaming XPSP2 into XPSP0/1 install files and burning onto a new CD. You get a much cleaner install than if you install XP and then SP2 on top of it.

There are some tutorials and even programs that will do this for you.

Some arsehat "borrowed" my burned one and never gave it back. Fortunately I can just make another when I need it.

Your computer won't run XP. Plus, I wouldn't trust the people that gave you the computer for that price.

I should also mention slipstreaming also improved bootup time exponentially for me. Installing SP2 over XP slows it down several times, but installing XP with SP2 slipstreamed has no boot penalty over XP SP 0.

He's got a new computer from his neighbors. Stop the "your computer won't run XP posts".
Pissed Off?

What color is your case?

If it's blue, you could borrow it to your wife (I made a funny) and you'd have all 4 things in one.

Except the new computer isn't at all significantly better than his old one.

His new computer isn't going to run XP well either.

He should just give up the computer until he can afford a decent one. Or stops being so annoying.

Whichever comes first.

Actually, I think it's about the same.
