1 space or 2 (or more?!!1)
2007-03-11, 5:13 AM #1
Hey, since I'm using ?!!1 as my question mark, was I right to keep it inside the brackets?

Anywho, when typing on a computer, should you use one space after a period at the end of sentences, or two?

One space. Double-spacing originated from typewriters which used fixed-width fonts. Modern e-cyberfonts include an extra space behind the period glyph and also offset it toward the previous text.

We've totally had this thread before. It wasn't even controversial that time.

I prefer single space. Easier to type, and not loses anything.

This one is always controversial i'm afraid. Besides, there are new fun people bring to the discussion this time.

Anyway, we've had all the other threads like this before too.

I prefer two spaces after a period, but that's just because of habit carried over from grade school typing class. One space, however, is correct.

I have never even heard of such a double space custom.

But then again, I haven't really used typewriters that much.

I use two, because that's how I was taught to write as well (with a bigger space after a full stop than after a comma). Although it doesn't make any difference on here, since it reverts it back to a single space anyway, I still type like that.
2007-03-11, 7:49 AM #10
It`s all in training, probably. Just like me typing ` for apostrophe.

Though, I don`t know, why`d one need double space.

Probably, it`s a hold-over from teletype machines?

using those ` character as apostrophe makes your text harder to read because it puts too much space between the characters.

On topic, 1 space. Two seems pointless.

Sigh. I can`t use '. First of all, it`s placed uncomfortably, second, it`s single quote, and I don`t like the ambiguity of using it as apostrophe as well.

Back on topic, though...

Does anyone knows the reason for doublespace?

Doesn't change the fact that it's annoying and wrong.

I just tend to use 2 spaces because that's the way I was taught and I never really tend to think about it.

...what??

English grammar dictates that for every verbal contraction or noun with possession (sun's corona) you use an apostrophe. Using ` in place of ' is wholly incorrect and makes you look stupid.

What is ` even used for, anyway? Why is it even on the keyboard?

Well, with Macs you can use Option+` to type accented vowels. Other than that, it's basically been adopted for use in some programming languages for comments and other things. It's not a very highly used symbol though. In fact, character sets in a lot of other countries just replace that symbol with their currency symbol.

You can also do this in Windows by changing your keyboard setup.

And it's also used in SQL (At least, MySQL, can't speak for the others) for table names, column names and database names in a query.

I seem to be the only one who has never even heard of two spaces being used after a period. I was never properly taught how to type, I'm just familiar with where all the keys are located and sort of do my own thing, maybe that's why.

I actually don't care very much though

I always type 2 spaces because that's how I was taught for hte longest time, but I recognize that it's wrong, and nowadays the standard is just one space. You kids these days....with your standards. Back in my day....!

where the hell is the ' key on your keyboard that its "placed uncomfortably." on my keyboard and every other one i've seen the ` key is much more uncomfortably placed in the upper left corner; whereas, with fingers on the home row all that must be done is to move the pinky 1/4" to the right. you dont even have to move it as far as hitting enter...

It refers to a specific ALT key. I forget which one though, it's been a while.

(Only one of the ALT keys will do the vowel function, the other one will do normal windows alt key shortcuts)

Keep in mind this doesn't work under default English keyboard settings, you have to set it to international.
