What was that movie called?

There's this one movie I remember seeing when I was 13 or 15 or so, but I could not for the life of me remember what it was called.

I remember it was set in the near future and was about the jailbreak from some high-tech futuristic prison with lasers and stuff.

The movie started with cons on a bus, I think, too, and there was this one really remarkable scene when some con (inside the prison) gets shot by an automated proton (or whatever shoots blue balls of energy) cannon right through the chest, ripping a big hole in him.

That's about all I can remember. Any ideas?

Oh man, I watched this a week ago. Is this the one where the guy in the army shoots his XO at the very beginning? Do they end up going to an island for convincts?

I think I remember what you're talking about, but can't think of exactly what you're thinking of. It stars someone famous too, and if they walk outside of the yellow line, they get zapped, outside the red one they die. Bah.

It's called Fortress with Christopher Lambert (from Highlander).

Only futuristic prison escape film i can think of is "No Escape" which starred Ray Liotta.

I searched for all the movies you've mentioned, and I think it was indeed Fortress. The few screenshots I've managed to find looked familiar, and I think I even recognized the vertically sliding "proton" turret on one them. Cool. Thanks.

Talking about Lambert, anyone remembers the 1997 film Nirvana? I always thought it was greatly underrated.

Certainly sounds like Fortress to me. That's the one where, when the guy gets zapped, the turret locks on to some kind of beacon that's implanted in the prisoners, right?

Fortress was awesome.

Was that the movie where the guy cut off his fingerprints and taped them to the censor so that he could escape?

If so, that was intense.
It took a while for you to find me; I was hiding in the lime tree.

No, I think that's Double Team with Van Damme.

I managed to switch to that movie on TV just as he was getting ready to escape, so I got the whole cigarette timer, fingerprint cutting thing. It was great.

It could also be Judge Dredd

But it isnt.

How could anyone forget Judge Dredd with people like Sylvester Stallone, Rob Schneider, and Diane Lane?

At first I was thinking "The Running Man" But then it sounded cooler than that so it can't be.

The Running Man > Christopher Lambert.

I can't forgive him the second film. What a steaming pile.
