My computer = pwnd

So I left school for 1 week to go on vacation.

I return and find that my computer is off, so I press the power button... Nothing. I make sure the powersupply is switched to on. Still nothing. I switch power cables, switch to other outlets that I know work and still nothing.

The computer isnt getting any power, so I went out and purchased a new PSU to see if that was the problem. I installed that this morning making sure everything was plugged in and still there is no power running to the computer.

So it cant be the PSU right? I mean I just tried it with a new one, so that should have worked. Does this mean its the motherboard?

Sounds that way.

Did you have it plugged into a power strip, or just the wall?

HINT, not everything that has 6 outlets on a strip is an actual surge protector.
2007-03-12, 12:10 PM #3
Why would you leave your computer on and unattended for a whole week? Sounds like a waste of energy to me.
2007-03-12, 12:12 PM #4
Power strip, im not at my apartment so I cant check if its a surge protector or not.

I asked someone already, but what are the chances that someone messing around with the fusebox would have caused this problem?

(My roomate once decided it would be funny to start turning on and off fuses one night while I was doing homework)

I dunno dude.

Either way it sounds like you're boned.
2007-03-12, 12:49 PM #6
Well, first thought was PSU, but you tried that. I'd say it pretty much has to be mobo or CPU, anything else and you'd at least have some activity when you turn it on.
2007-03-12, 12:52 PM #7
Have you tested to insure that the outlet itself is getting power?

Try the old fork in the socket thing, then you'll know for sure.

Some guy came to my school when I was a kid to lecture about safety, he claimed that a kid he went to school with was dared to attach a paper clip to his tongue and stick it in the socket. He apparently did it, and only has 1/4 of his tongue to this day.

Yea, I plugged a lamp into the outlet and it turned on fine.

Checklist that you haven't tried yet:

A. That the power button is plugged in (And correctly) for the case. (hell, just short the pins with a screwdriver and then avoid the hassle)
B. Resetting CMOS
C. Rechecking ALL power connectors in the system. Some mobos have multiple power points on it, so check carefully.
D. Start unplugging devices from the motherboard. Start with the USB devices, then CD drives, then the hard drives, then the sound card/peripheral cards, and as a last ditch, the RAM and Video Card (You should at least get some beeping out of the motherboard with either of those removed)
2007-03-12, 5:30 PM #12
Plug your computer straight into the wall, maybe your power strip is fried.
2007-03-12, 6:03 PM #13
I'll bet something is shorting out your mobo...I'd look at your sound card

A. Yea checked that fairly quickly and the plugs were in fine.

B. No idea what that means ;_;

C. Did that multiple times.

D. I did that but in reverse order. Tried with JUST the motherboard, then the hard drive, then video card. Im fairly certain its the soundcard that I hadnt been using that was doing it.

And Chewie - If you didnt see, I had said that I plugged a lamp into the socket before I used it to make sure it worked properly.

Update- it appears to be one of my peripherals. Or at least, one of them are causing trouble. I think it might be the CD drive... who knows.

And due to my carelessness, the SATA plug for my second hard drive got bent and its not responding anymore... horray.

Unplug your power supply. Take the battery out of your motherboard. Wait a few minutes. Put it back in. = Resetting CMOS.

Correct me if I'm wrong. I think that's the way.

That was the oooold way.

Plus many batteries are soldered on.

Most motherboards nowadays have a CMOS reset jumper that you just short.
2007-03-13, 4:23 AM #18
Ah okay. Any suggestions about getting the drive to respond?

humorous but sadly does not help my SATA issue.

If bending it back didn't help then the contacts probably came apart, in which case you're screwed.
2007-03-14, 8:48 AM #24
Looking at it, it doesnt look like that happened. I havent taken off the board or anything to look... but looking under the drive though, there doesnt appear to be any signs that the contacts came apart.

2007-03-14, 10:49 PM #26
I assume you tested the SATA cable, the port, and made sure SATA was turned on in BIOS?
2007-03-14, 10:54 PM #27
I havent tested the cable, but what do you mean about the port?

And SATA is turned on because Ive been running these 2 SATA drives for a while now.
[01:52] <~Nikumubeki> Because it's MBEGGAR BEGS LIKE A BEGONI.
2007-03-14, 10:56 PM #28
The SATA port on the mobo.

And many mobos allow you to even disable just one port, so it's worth checking anyway.
2007-03-15, 8:55 PM #29
<mb`> also about my hard drive
<mb`> i noticed its not plugged into the mobo anymore

Im pretty sure I unplugged it after the fact....

Anyway.

Yea, I went to reboot and now I dont get more than a few mobo lights turning on. I unplugged everything except the mobo, I even took my video card out annnnnd nothing. So I really dont know whats going on. bah.

SoooOoOoOoOoOoo

Im convinced my motherboard is FRIED. I tried 2 PSUs and the only response I get is a little yellow light that turns on. No fans or anything.
I made sure to unplug everything including my videocard as well as other drives.

So its time for you to be helpful. If youre not Ill ban your face off.

:hist101: :hist101: :hist101: :hist101: :hist101:

Do I need a new motherboard or am I just being stupid?

If I need a new motherboard, whats a good one to get? Right now I have a DFI lanparty motherboard, AMD Athlon XP 2700+, and 1GB ram.

The only thing I really do with my computer is 3D animation and stuff like that. Occaisionally games, but Im not replacing the videocard so thats not a big deal.

Again, be helpful or be banned.

99% sure it'd be the motherboard. You should get a piece of cardboard, I hear those work well. PS--posting your specs would help us, you know, say which motherboard to get.

er.. right.

Athlon XP 2700+
1gb DDR Ram

2 SATA hard drives.

PCI-E ATI x800

the case is ATX and fairly spacious.

I was wondering how you had a DFI Lanparty when, 1) They SUCKED back in the days of the Socket A CPUs, and 2) The Lanparty logo wasn't created til AMD64 boards, iirc, or at least was limited to Opterons. Not positive about that, but I never saw it til the AMD64s dropped.
