I just got hired by the US Forest Service to be a wildland firefighter this summer. Exactly what I wanted to be doing this summer. I'm going to be working my *** off from June to November; 16 hour days out on fire lines out in the summer heat. Here's hoping California and the entire western US burns this summer. :P

A "Crispy California" sounds like a dish in a trendy restaurant, or perhaps a type of alcoholic drink.

It also sounds like a sexual euphemism, but I don't wanna think about the specifics of that. :gonk:

That is awesome, man...that's the kind of thing I have been wishing I could get as a summer job, haha. Be careful out there! Watch your escape routes!

It's going to be wicked hot again today. He may very well get his wish.

I used to help our local fire department with grass fires and such. Carried a pager and the whole bit. Grass fires/wildfires suck the most. Give me a burning building any day.

Neat, an old friend of mine did this for several years. As well as working on a helitack crew.

Lots of great stories and photos.
One photo I remember the comment being "See that big ball of fire behind me? That could have killed me very easily."
And of course in the pic he's smiling, looking content as could be.

However, he did have two friends of his die.

So I say good luck to ya man, you are a braver soul than I.

Fire is natural and essential to a healthy forest. Heavy fire suppression results in the buildup of ground-level fuel. This results in catastrophic wildfire that burns hot enough to induce hydrophobicity in the soil and heavy erosion. Controlled burning, thinning, and proper management are essential to ensuring this does not happen.

As a forestry expert, isn't it your opinion that natural burns are good for the environment, and that old growth needs to be cleared out? How do you reconcile this with your new position?

It's pretty easy to reconcile, since there's almost always structures and families in harm's way out living in the burn area.

That is his belief, I know, as he's told me as much before.
