Goodness, that's quite a sum of money. Google could afford to just pay the whole lawsuit now, but if this gets any grounds now - it could pave the way for a string of lawsuits.

I don't really know how Google will defend this either in court, but it'll be interesting to see. Viacom owns Comedy Central - and I love watching the Colbert Report replays on it...:(

If I were Google I'd countersue for $1 billion because Viacom bombarded YouTube with 15,000,000 fraudulent DMCA takedown notices.

I completely agree with Joncey.
nope.

I don't get how this is the fault of Google or YouTube. It was the stupid person who uploaded the illegal material in the first place. I'm sure it is feasable to retrieve at least an IP from the person who posted video. Prosecute the stupid person not the company.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

No, they are actually right in that case. Neglecting to defend your copyrights in one instance can be used against you when you sue in another instance. They aren't being heros; they are saving their own asses.
Wikissassi sucks.

Google has all the money though. Not Joe Blow who uploaded the video.

What happened to that software Google was writing that supposedly scans videos and detects copyrighted material? It doesn't work? Oh you don't say?!

I can see why it would come to a lawsuit. If I visit YouTube, I view illegal, copyrighted material 9 times out of 10, primarily music videos just for the songs, stage performances, or TV shows. I don't care for the emo guy, the hot chick, or the millions of random nobodies who decided to take video footage of themselves for attention. Many viewers don't come only to see the original stuff either.

I think it's dumb that Viacom is having a fuss. Youtube is free advertising for everything they have on there.

Money.

In honor of this, I am going to go watch as many Star Trek clips on Youtube as I can.

So did everyone that took part in the crusades, or the conquest of the NEW LAND by the conquistadors.

Or Napoleon.

Or Hitler....

Or George W. Bush...

So?

It's not like you're the sole arbitrator who decides who the heroes are, Rob.

No, but I sure can make observations!

Actually, I highly doubt any of those people looked upon themselves as heroes. Of course that doesn't mean others don't look at them that way.

Dont forget Patton.

But then again he just wanted to kill Nazis and Communists because he thought they were dicks.

He also thought he was Napoleon reincarnated... which is odd.
