Which is the Hottest

Ok this sounds silly but a year ago at my friend’s birthday we had this huge discussion and it comes up every time we order pizza and it just happened again. We got 3 pizzas and they were sitting in the front seat of his car. A 91 Ford Escort with cloth seats. His father said save the bottom one it will be the hottest but then we all started discussing what one was the hottest. I personally say its the middle one but they say heat rises so the top is the hottest or the bottom is the hottest cause its insulated. Anyway vote!

Hot air goes UP.

Wait except they're in boxes and thus hot air won't travel. Grrr. i r dum

Did it take you an hour to drive back from the pizza place?

Middle. It had hot objects above and below it. The one on the bottom lost heat to the outside air, while the one on the bottom lost heat to the car seat.

That's my explanation anyway. I admittedly know nothing of science.

it took about 10 - 15 mins

and Michael thats exactly what i said to them haha and i think you mean the top one lost heat to the outside air

Send the question into Mythbusters. They're running pretty low on myths to test I think.

Yeah, something like that.

The fact that your explanation was the same as mine doesn't bode well for it, though.

It just so happens that I was in attendance at that birthday party. And it was quite an intense debate we had going. Here’s my take on it:

It is indeed a scientific fact that hot air rises. However in this scenario the hot air is mostly trapped within the boxes. Thus the boxes act sort of like heaters. The bottom pizza retains its own heat will simultaneously receiving the heat from the top and middle boxes. Therefore my conclusion is that the bottom box would be the hottest.

I was really torn between top and middle. Top seems logical since hot air rises.

However, since the middle one is sandwiched between two hot boxes, it may very well be the hottest. I'm almost positive the bottom will not be the hottest.

Yeah, they are. They should just start blowing stuff up.

Seems to me the middle one has the most insulation.

Here's a more scientific explanation:

The middle box only has a tiny amount of surface area exposed to the air: only the thin sides. The bottom box has those same sides exposed, plus it's losing heat out the bottom through the cloth seat. The top box is losing heat like crazy through the top portion of the box, which is entirely exposed to the much cooler air on top of it. The heat will transfer much more slowly from within the middle box, because the top and bottom surfaces of the middle box are almost the exact same temperature as their adjacent surfaces. Thus, there is much less incentive for heat to transfer outside of the middle box for a much longer time.

Middle one, for sure.

I'd say middle, for the reasons stated above.

Maybe, but how about five minutes later? Ten minutes? Twenty minutes? The middle one is going to outlast the other boxes by a fair amount.

I was torn between the middle one and the bottom one. Finally went with the bottom one.

Couldn't it be like when you're in bed on a cold night? The more covers you have on top of you, the warmer you are. I'd rather have two pizzas on top of me, then lay on a pizza and have one above me.

Not that I am a middle pizza... but... whatever. I'm no scientist. :ninja:

No idea, I think I'd go with middle.

How about if you have the seat heater on high setting?

I voted for the middle one, but if you turn that switch, then the bottom one could win.

This reminds me of the time the Greeks were sitting around arguing about how many teeth were in a horse.

Why doesn't someone go buy 3 pizzas, stack them up, drive home, and check the temps?

My engineering student friend asks what material the seats are made of. If it's a good insulator, he claims it's most likely that the bottom pizza will stay hotter for a longer time.

that was my thought... But then I considered also, that the pizza is hotter than then the seat initially, and therefore heat would transfer to the seat quicker, thus the bottom pizza would cool quicker...
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

The two pizza boxes are much better insulators than any car seat. At least initially (during the time in transit, for sure).

Your pizza restaurants suck. Ours use a big isolated box, to keep every pizza euqally hot.

But in this scenario I'd say the middle one.

Well the ones around here keep all the boxes in a space-age insulator bag. So there.
