CS cd key help

ok. I bought a copy of half life: counter strike from my friend, I put it in and it says I need a cd key from inside the cd case. So I call up my buddy asking for the cd key, he tells me he threw the case out. So is there anyway I can get a cd key? or if someone has one that they arent using can you PM it to me please? thanks

You're screwed. If you want to play on-line at all you'll need to sign up for steam, and you can't reuse a CD key at all. You're probably going to want to e-mail valve to see if they can help you.
2004-07-16, 11:14 AM #6
I would just git your money back.. then buy normal half-life, then download the mod(assuming you still can just download it now-a-days)
2004-07-16, 11:15 AM #7
Valve wont help you. You need a cd key before they'll even consider helping. Then you have to mail them your original case.

since he paid for the software second-hand and owns a legit copy, would using a keygen be illegal in this case?

Just curious.

Not true. All you need is proof of ownership. I sent them a picture when I had similar problems and they sent me another cd key by email.

He pretty much shafted you, as you cannot play the game without the CD key. Some friend eh?

Morfildor: by that logic, you could make many CD keys, unless they had a way to ban your original one. If his friend is still using that CD key, than he cannot legitimately claim another one.

Yeah, it's illegal because you could generate someone else's cdkey, and thus be stealing someone else's property.

How much did you buy it for? It better be less than $15.

If I want to use Steam on two computers, do I need two different CD keys?

So, will I have to buy Half-Life again?

This may be the only reason I'd consider buying Counterstrike: CZ, providing the key to it works on Steam.

YEs, steam is very, very keen on checking Cd keys, so you msut have a new one for a new computer.

You wont be able to play at all with out a valid unused cd key that works on steam now. Valve closed WON a couple of days ago.

No, you don't need two CD keys, as long as you don't play online with the two at the same time. I've got Steam installed on three computers here at home, all with the same CD key. Once you've created an account, when you install Steam on the second computer, just put in your account email and password. You don't need to put the CD-key again because it is stored on Valve's servers.

This may be a bit illegal, but it's foolproof.
Head to your local electronics store with a camera phone and look for Half-Life/CS/Anything valve related. On certain clearance items, the CD key is displayed on the outside, in clear view. Simply take a picture of the CD key with your camera phone, doing your best to not make it obvious. Voila, you have a CD key. But the poor guy who actually buys the product will have to fend for himself, just as you have.

Yeah except the poor guy that bought it from the store is more justified in having it than he is.

Not really. He needs a key, and as soon as management finds an open box, they ship it back/throw it out. Nobody would be stupid enough to buy a game whose box is open, and if they just didn't check, they could always trade it in for a new one.

Actually, rather than using that key, he could claim it won't work with steam and then easily get another from valve.

I bet even in the most hardcore of Warez forums, people get flamed for doing something like that.

Actually, nearly any large retail chain, like Wal-Mart, will just re-cover the box and stick it back out like it is new.

I'm surprised you're able to use CS at all without Half-Life. I bought a multi-pack with Half-Life, CS, Team Fortress, etc. and when I installed CS I had to put in my HL disc to verify I had it.

The CS retail is a stand-alone.

I'd say your best bet is to get your money back from the friend, if at all possible.
