Problem with a friend's computer
2007-03-24, 10:47 AM #1
So apparently my friend is having trouble with his computer; he says that when he turns it on, it starts booting up but then shuts off again. However he also said that the power light on the computer stays on, which leads me to think that it might be a problem with the video card? I really don't know, but I'm going to be going to take a look at it in person and I wondered if anyone has any suggestions.

Here's the relevant part of the e-mail he sent me:

Its has never done this before until now..

When I turn it on the computer starts to work.. The screen stars also but then its shuts down again. The power light stays on but the computer turns off!

Actually come to think of it it has done this before.. It would just turn off in the middle of a game or program.

I then have to hold the off button for about 10 secs before the power light will turn off

Could be a PSU problem...I've seen problems like that before.

Yeah that's the other thing I was thinking; he's rather vague as to what parts of the computer actually turn off.

I had a similar problem, but it was my video card. When I took my vid card out, it booted with the onboard video just fine.

Is this a desktop? I would assume so...

Yeah, thankfully; I'd destroy a laptop if I tried to pull components out of it.
