My attempt not to use blackmail and death threats
2007-03-30, 12:11 AM #1
If I were to listen to FastGamerr, I'd be using less-than-legal tactics at going about this, but I'm just too lazy...

THE SHORT:
I want more people to post on the Interactive Story Board (ISB). Specifically, I want people to post NEW THREADS. :o

THE LONG:
Despite what you may think, the ISB is NOT synonymous with the NeS threads. If it were, I'd have asked it to be renamed the NeS board long ago. There have been other successful story threads in the past, and I'd like there to be more successful story threads to come.

In the last year, we've had Genki's six words thread, Grismath posting a short story of his, Steven's use of a "choose your own adventure" style format to one of his famous "Steven's Adventures ______" threads, Tracer's revival of the Spooky Taco, and a Massassi Soap Opera. These are all awesome things to post on the ISB, and I think people fail to see how many ways the ISB could be used.
  • Posting your own stories and poems to be reviewed by other writers
  • Posting crazy story-like excersises (six-word thread, alliteration thread, "beat this picture" threads, MS Paint stories)
  • Things with hardly a "story" at all (spooky taco)
  • and, of course big, complicated formal, interactive, possibly ongoing stories like NeS

If it has any sort of narrative element, character element, and/or focus on the use of words, you all should post it on the ISB! Now to try and debunk some "requirements" of the ISB:

I don't want to write for NeS
Good! I'm not asking you to write for NeS here! I want you to write for some OTHER thread, or make a new thread! I want the ISB to be an active board worthy of being between the Discussion Board and the Showcase Board.

I have to be a good writer to post on the ISB
Nonsense! If that were the case, I'd have never been posting on it back in 1999. Hell, you don't have to be a writer at ALL. As long as something even VAGUELY resembling a story is being posted, and you're having fun, that's ALL you need. If you want to try and become a better writer, awesome, but I want ACTIVE posters :P

Writing takes a lot of effort...
If you've ever posted on an MS Paint thread, or a word association thread, or a bar fight thread, than that's all the effort you need for the ISB. I doubt anyone even put THAT much effort into posting on a thread like the Spooky Taco. The whole "writing well" stigma keeps a lot of us posting a lot less on the ISB than it should.

If I post something on the ISB, no one will see it.
That's a vicious circle -- no one sees it because no one posts on the ISB, and no one posts on the ISB because no one will see it. If more people start posting stuff on the ISB, more people will start seeing it and thus post more on the ISB. It has to start somewhere. I'll do my best to try and publisize new material on the ISB, but I can't talk about what's not there.

So please, post on the ISB! Post anything! Get other people to post! If you all have suggestions on what sort of threads you want to see on the ISB, post it here! If you have suggestions on what would motivate you all more to post on the ISB (like a contest or something), post it here!

Pffft. Weakling. Everyone knows that blackmail and death threats will get people to do things.

BTW, I have images of Wolfy and Vinny and what appears to be a goat in compromising situations. They are not for the feint of heart but they are EXCELLENT in blackmailing.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

This is my favorite ISB thread. If there were more threads like that, I'd be on the ISB all the time. :neckbeard:

Perhaps if admins would move every new story-related thread into the ISB more people would notice that it's even there.

Yeah. Koobie posted a story in the showcase (although I think it may have just been a one-off post).

Edit - I always thought that the Spooky Taco had a lot of merit as a creative writing excercise...

Did you post under a different user account? I only saw one post of yours using a search, from 2002, and it didn't seem particularly un-ignored? I try my best not to ignore material on the ISB outright... :/

I posted a lot of the stuff I wrote back in the day in Showcase because I was (still am) looking for comments and critiques, as opposed to starting a new story for people to add on. If the NES forum (eh, I mean the ISB) would be renamed to Writing Forum OF INEVITABLY IMPEDING DOOM or something along the lines, I'd be the first in line to join.

EDIT: There! I posted something! I would gladly read and give crits to short stories and flash fiction and the like, but I've simply no time (or desire, really) to dedicate to an on-going project.

I've 'role played' on other forums by posting little bits of story and then the conclusion is something very cool.

Is this what the ISB is sorta like?
2007-03-30, 7:26 AM #14
i'll post there if you tell us about the blackmail and death threats.

Whoa, now there's seven ISB threads. It's a new era.:psyduck:

The thread with the 394,321 exclamation points is annoying to look at.

I'm up for starting a fantasy-style story chain if anyone is interested. I do them plenty of times, and am in one right now. Massassi just has a loooot of people to worry about, but I don't want to limit the number of participants and make people feel excluded.

I'll think on it.

Thanks for all the activity so far, people! I'll try what I can to look at all of the new threads more thoroughly soon. :) Keep the activity up, please! :neckbeard:

I'll certainly think about getting the name changed. At the very least, the forum descriptor could be changed to be less limiting.

The ISB could very well be a role-playing type board, among more traditional story-writing.

It can be hard to get people to join. All I can suggest Yecti is to keep on trying.

Yeah. I think it's not so much getting other people to write for your story as being the one who posts even when nobody else is (like Geb and NeS).

Yeah, what gives? I've been trying to get Ante to write his freakin' part already, but I might give up soon and write it myself if he doesn't. Haven't heard a word from Krig or TLTE, and quesadilla_red's bein' all picky as usual... oy.

Anyways, I changed my signature to be just "check out the ISB!" because there's too many crazy threads going on right now to pick JUST one. Keep it up though, and I'll start includin' them in my signature :)
