In five days (next Friday), the Lord of the Rings Online open beta launches.

I've spoken to our resident Gandalf about this, and here's what he had to say:

(9:42:45 PM) Me: YOU SHOULD TOO
(9:42:51 PM) Brandon (JediGandalf): Another MMORPG
(9:43:06 PM) Me: an MMORPG based on TRUE and ACTUAL events!
(9:43:15 PM) Me: err
(9:43:26 PM) Me: that happened in one of the greatest books ever written!
(9:43:27 PM) Brandon (JediGandalf): ..from a ficticious book written in 1930s?
(9:43:40 PM) Me: c'ome
(9:43:55 PM) Me: back then they had plenty of hobbits, just like buffalo in the U.S.
(9:44:12 PM) Me: everyone knows theyy've became extinct after the 1950's

I was in the closed beta and thought that it was simply more of the same. As a matter of fact, it's not even as good as most of the MMORPGs that have been out for a bit...

Really? I heard quite the opposite

Yea, it's quite different, it's LOTR. duh.

Don't get me wrong, it looked like it would have been fun to play, just nothing revolutionary enough to take people away from WoW. Also, I only played the beta for 1 day before I got bored with it. I had the same problem with Guild Wars when I was in the beta for that as well, so my opinion may be a bit biased. As a matter of fact, the only MMORPGs that I've ever been able to tolerate were EQ1, DAoC, AC2, and WoW.

I'll play the beta, if for no other reason than because it's free.

Just looking at the screenshots I can tell that's it's totally divorced from the lotr "feel". Best left out of games if you ask me.

I could easily nab the lotro beta cd at work, but I won't beacuse it looks like crap.

It looks like any other MMORPG but with more "franchise milking". :psyduck: I'll wait till STO thank you very much.

yo I was in 2 of the closed betas and I personally think this:

It's world of warcraft with lotr lore - an auction house, a mailbox, 'talents', same kinds of quests, raids, and instances (many of these things with the exact same name). Also, worse graphics*. I'm running an x800 and a 2.5ghz dual core amd with a gig of ram and I tried running it where the graphics didn't look like crap, and it was choppy as hell.

conclusion - if you really like lotr, go for it. otherwise don't bother.

I played in the stress test a short while ago and from what I've played, it seem promising but its too much like WoW with everquest 2 graphics. The entire interface is like a near carbon copy of WoW! I thought that part was kinda disappointing but some parts of the game seems promising.
