UDF packet cd programs?
2004-07-18, 11:33 AM #1
I'm looking for a program that allows drag & drop CD-RW writing support like Nero 5.x had back in Win98. To the best of my knowledge, nero doesn't have that feature anymore.

Winxp has a cd burning feature that allows drag and drop, but i hate going through a big complicated procedure just to burn a few files to disc. besides, i don't thing the winxp burning thing is true UDF packet burning, b/c the whole disc image is being rewritten each time instead of having new files written individually. Also, the winxp thing is wasteful of space, b/c after updating the files on a CD-RW a few times, Winxp infoms me the disc is "full" even though it has only about 200 mb or usable data on it.

I want something that more or less plugs into windows explorer that will let me drag files to Cd and will do real udf packet cd burning w/o making me hassle a bunch of stuff first. Something fast, free and GNU would be ideal, but shareware would also be acceptable..

any recommendations?

There's DirectCD, which I hate, and I don't know if it's even free or UDF or whatever.

I'm pretty sure the latest version of Nero still does drag-and-drop.

But the XP thing is a lot quicker and easier if you're just going to burn a few files to a CD.. The other criticisms are probably true, though.

Generally drag and drop isnt any good, just because it is prone to errors and depending on how it is done, it can reburn the directory table, causing space to be used very rapidly.

A better way (the way I do it) is to mount a folder called "To Burn", drag files to that drive(actually a virtual drive, mounted folder), and then copy that entire drive onto the CD when I'm done.

Make it even easier on yourself by setting the max filesize for the mounted folder to 700MB, so you know when you have filled it.
