We've spoken of it occasionally in chat, so I just thought I'd see how many Azumanga fans we have on Massassi.

Funny that I was actually talking about this show just this morning. :P

Favorite characters, anyone? I always enjoy the hapless antics of Kaorin, but I guess my favorite of the main characters is probably Osaka.

Invader Zim, Futurama, Family Guy, Ren and Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life, South Park, Batman the Animated Series all look different, don't you agree?

Japanese Cartoon
Back again

Pulling out completely unrelated cartoons from the past fifteen(?) years for comparison is a bit unfair. Much the same as me using some vague 1970s superrobot show, along with Mobile Suit Gundam(Original), Dragonball <Insert Letter(s)>, Yu Yu Hakusho, Hellsing, Naussica, and [You made me do this] Super Milk-Chan.

I edited everything that sucked out of that list.

What? Now the shows have to be "related" somehow to prove my point?

I'll put it in "related" categories just for you.

Popular Comedy shows: South Park, Futurama, Family Guy, King of the Hill, Aqua Teen Hunger Force

Popular Kiddy Shows: Eddy, Ed and Eddy, Spongebob, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Powerpuff Girls

Popular Action Shows: Samurai Jack, The Batman, Justice League, Megas XLR

I hardly ever watch these shows (alot of them I hate) but the point that these shows look quite different still stands. And they are all recent cartoon shows. Or "animated series" if you want to call them that.

I win.

I've never seen it but by the look of it I would really really really really really really really dislike it.

What did you win? If making shows look visually as different from each other as possible is your measure for quality, then I'm happy it's not the reality. Even real life people(s) don't look that different from each other, aside from skin colouring and other small details. So why on earth would animated series need to have (character) design differences so vast?

And even in anime there are big design differences. You certainly won't win anything by not knowing what you are talking about. Anime is business; they are producing what the audience wants to watch, and in this case it's the Japanese audience.

Yeah, and Azumanga was a great series, to get a word on topic as well...

Update: I watched part of an episode and it has many of the annoying anime archetypes I despise but it's not quite as annoying as I expected. That's a nice surprise.
2007-04-11, 1:32 AM #24
I think this series has very strong and sharp anime archetypes on purpose. It's kind of built on such a setting.

The argument that "American cartoons" look the same. I wasn't addressing anything about Japanese animation.

I should be an admin, so I could take all practically off-topic posts and move them to a huge dump thread called ... "Dump Thread".

For instance.

Then we couldn't argue whether "Japenese Cartoons" or "The Cartoons We Have" are "terrible in culture" or not.

We must know!
2007-04-11, 5:29 AM #31
Of course you could in the dump thread. Why not?

It makes fun of itself, seriously. They take every cliche and beat it into the ground. Quite funneh. :D

Osaka was the most annoying character at times, but I think she was still my favorite at the same time.

Or... maybe... Yukari sensei...

Most of "The Popular Kiddy Shows" section could be considered clones as far as style is concerned. Megas is sort of anime styled...

Anyway, my point is that there are the same kind of stylistic variations in anime as there are in American cartoons. Of course, there's also the fact that the anime industry pumps out a whole new batch of shows every season, with a scant few ongoing series. The American cartoons listed, as far as I know, have been going since at least 2003. There's just not as much here to notice the similarities in, if we had a dozen new shows every season i'm sure things would start to run together.
