The only time they were EVER referred to as a Xenomorph in a movie is in "Aliens", and that was by the new Lt. who didn't know anything.
There is not a formal name given to the "Alien" species, as there haven't been any surviving scientists to study it.
The reason that Gorman used the term xenomorph was because he was trying to impress the others. "Xenomorph" does not mean "shape-shifter". It means "strange form".
xeno-, xen- (Greek: foreign, foreigner, strange, stranger; and by extension, guest).
The “x” in xeno- is pronounced “z”; “zeno”. Greeks are said to have considered any stranger a “guest” and modern Greek includes xenodocheion a “guest house” or “house for guests” or its modern version of “hotel”.
-and-
morpho-, morph-, -morphous, -morphically, -morphia, -morphosis, -morphously, -morphy, -morphic, -morphism (Greek: shape, form, figure, appearance).
In other words, Gorman was saying "we don't know what is".
I hate it when people refer to them as Xenomorphs!! So stop it!
