I need a media player

I've used iTunes since forever and I love it, however it has crapped out on me recently -- it reboots whenever I put an audio CD in the tray, which means I can't rip my records. I've tried everything to get it to work, but to no avail.

I've tried using EAC/LAME for cd ripping instead, but it was waaay too complicated for me and I got these hour-long tracks for some reason. :psyduck:

So I'm looking for an alternative.

Features I'm looking for is one-click cd-ripping/burning and a browsable/searchable music library like iTunes.

Winamp wants :20bux: for ripping and burning and foobar2000 seems so alien (I can't decipher the homepage to find out if it supports ripping). halp plox

Hate to say it, but WMP11 does a damn good job of this.

I used to use WMP for ripping. Now I'm just lazy and use WinAmp.

Actually you can rip and burn for free... just not more than 8x.

You're lazy but you went to all the trouble of downloading another program for something that you already had...?

Fascinating...

I don't. WMP11 is a fantastic media player.

Yeah, it really does, as long as you have an mp3 encoder installed. Or has that changed with 11?

Uh, 10 didn't need that, and I don't think 9 did either.

To Emon: I don't think it's a good player though. It eats resources like it has nothing better to do. Not to mention, the lack of global hotkeys is :saddowns:

Oh, yeah, dbpoweramp is also great for ripping, need to pay for the mp3 codec though.

I use WinAmp for my player and movies, I'd have to look for the shortcut to WMP if I wanted to use it.

foobar2000

Probably not what you're looking for, but I'll plug it anyway.

Really, on which OS? On Vista, it plays video better than VLC or MPC, which don't work with anything but OpenGL video output. I have no doubt it uses a good bit more CPU than foobar2000, which is my music player.

Oh wow, those idiots at MS finally released WMP 11 for x64. It's only been a year. Or was it two?

WMP11 was released on November 8th of 2006. The x64 build has been available since January 15th of 2007. :downswords:

Uh, what?

A. Media Player Classic and WMP11 can use the exact same methods of playing video. MPC can and does use DirectX rendering. Hell, it doesn't even HAVE OpenGL. VLC's directx rendering modes seem to be broken, but Windows GDI works fine, as does the OpenGL.
B. It uses an insane amount of resources, even when minimized.
C. It will literally lag and skip when playing in the background. Totally retarded.

This is all on Vista, although it runs pretty damn crappily on XP too.

Sorry, I meant on Vista. I thought MPC had an OpenGL rendering mode. As for GDI, it's ugly as sin. And slow. Because it's GDI. GDI sucks.

That must be an isolated incident, because right now I'm listening to music with it. It takes 8 MB of RAM when in focus, 0-2% CPU usage. Minimized it's about 3 MB.

What I mean is, it lags throughout the interface. Scrolling through my music library, minimizing, or running it in the background during the game is lag-o-mania.

GDI isn't terribly slow at all. The quality isn't too hot, sure, but it is rather fast.

Sure thing, chief.
