New Attachment Rules
2007-04-16, 8:38 PM #1
EDIT BY BRIAN:
This thread is complete bull****, you can attach as many attachments as you want, and you SHOULD be able to count on the fact that this is the #1 best way to make sure the attachment stays part of Massassi history forever (or till we close down). Read my post below for more information on this.

Quote:
We've been investigating recent downtime on the server and have determined that one of the problems is the ridiculous amount of attachments we have accrued. As a result, all attachments older than November 1, 2006 have been deleted, and there is now a 1MB limit for every user's attachments.

Please be kind to Massassi and use an external service to post images, if you can.

I thought this was a given. Why would we need the attachments to last longer than a week or two?

If you're going to post an image you want to be permanent (like, for example, on the camhoes thread), then you should use external hosting.

I'm not sure, but I think this means if you have over 1MB of active attachments, you will have to delete some in order to be able to post attachments again. In this case of SAJN_Master who has 10MB of attachments, this may be alot of work.

This is the sort of thing why post your pic threads and name that game threads should be outlawed.

Put a couple month limit then delete them.

It should be noted that in the UserCP, at the bottom left, is an Attachment section, where you can view your quota and all the attachments you have, as well as delete them.

I read the first post and instantly went "Oh shi-" remembering the three "-=^_^=- Threads" I posted. Then I scrolled down and saw that I had over 10MB of uploaded images.....Yeaaaaaaah. Sorry about that >.<

[Edit: I did a bit of cleaning up, sorry about that. "You are currently using 466.9 KB to store 4 uploaded attachments."]

SAJN, can you send me all of those images in a .zip? I'll host them on my webspace. I hart them all.

I made most of them myself Greenboy, so I don't think a lot of them will be on that site.

I cleaned out mine from last year. Still have 8 though.

I mostly use imageshack and photobucket lately anyway.

I, FOR ONE, FEEL THIS IS NOT A GOOD THING TO DO.
2007-04-19, 9:24 AM #17
Me neither, this is complete horse crap. Not only did brad implement a limit that I had decided against numerous times in the past, he also deleted about 5 years of massassi history by irreversibly deleting old attachments without my permission. He is no longer an admin. I'm going to remove this limit on attachments and try to find some way to restore the old ones, but it's really not looking good. Which is a damn shame.
2007-04-19, 9:27 AM #18
The "problem" with the server downtime is that we're backing up the entire database (not just forums) each night and putting them into a directory. The backups eventually fill up the server and thus we have no space left for new posts/etc. The REAL fix to this is to fix out backup script to delete old backups, which CM is working on. Argh.
2007-04-19, 9:30 AM #19
Are the old attachments really worth the forum problems? They're stored in the forum DB, which means there'd be more to repair if something DID go wrong, the backups would take longer, the backups would take up more space and unless MySQL has some sort of magic O(1) sorcery going on, it'd make pretty much any admin CP op take forever to finish and reduce the forum to an unresponsive mess while it was happening.

And, also, we are talking about gigabytes upon gigabytes of photos of SAJN_Master here.....

Edit: I don't know if this is intentional or not, but the forums do go down every night while the backup is happening. If it's unintentional I'd appreciate a fix, since that's pretty much my prime time these days. If it's intentional, well... I'm hardly a WEB 2.0 SCIENTIST but I'm pretty sure MySQL can do a dump while serving a database, so there isn't any reason for the forums to go down while backing up.
2007-04-19, 9:46 AM #20
It's not the attachments that are the problem, it's the backup script. We could put attachments on the filesystem to alleviate the problem of forums getting really slow when backups are running. But there are other things in the middle of the night that run, too, like web stats parsing, etc. The whole server gets slow I would guess.
2007-04-19, 9:47 AM #21
The restoration of the attachments won't be done via AdminCP (there's no function for it).

Thus, the lag you mentioned shouldn't really happen. I'm working with Brian on this and I'll try to minimize the downtime as much as possible (if all goes perfectly it should only be down for the amount of time it takes to upload the DB).
2007-04-19, 9:47 AM #22
Oh, and the backups take 1gb per day, so we have actually a bit less than a GB across every table on the entire server (not just massassi, but also jkhub, and other sites we host but don't advertise).

Yeah it's about that time (12:30 local) when the forums freeze.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.
