I'm shopping for a laptop (my first) and I wondered what you guys think about this one:

Acer Aspire 5612ZWLMi
- 15,4" screen
- Intel Core Duo T2060 1,6 GHz
- 2GB DDR2 RAM
- 120GB SATA HDD
- Mobile Intel® 943GML Express 224 MB integrated graphics

It goes for 8990 SEK, which is roughly €900.

The amount of RAM is very tempting, but the processor and graphics aren't very hot. Its not a gaming computer, so the integrated graphics is not really an issue. I won't play anything newer than Eve on it in any case.

Alternatives are a HP with a Core 2 Duo processor, 1GB of RAM and GeForceT Go 7400 256MB or a Fujitsu-Siemens with a Turion X2 processor, 2GB RAM and GeForceT Go 7400 128/332MB (no idea what that means, 128MB onboard and an additional 332 shared?) for 9990 SEK / €1000.

What's the kind of performance I can expect from these, if I were to play some new game like C&C3?

Decide exactly what you want to do with the laptop. That can sway your choice between a small, low-powered machine and a portable desktop. If your laptop is going to sit in your residence most of the time, then go for more power.

I'll mostly use it at work. I work 12h night shifts and sometimes those nights are VERY long. There's some great deals for wireless internet here too so that's just gravy.

As far as C&C3, I would be surprised if it played the game at all.

Eve might work, but don't expect wonders.

Personally, I really don't like integrated graphic for laptops. But as long as you aren't planning to game, I guess that's no real problem. I just had some bad experiences with integrated graphics on a laptop my family owns.

If you plan to play C&C3, you're going to need a better graphics card. How much can you afford to spend?

If you have a spare windows license kicking around for running your games on, hell yes.

Eve is DirextX7-based and CPU intensive. It hardly uses the GPU at all.

My budget is in the low €1000s. Is the Turion X2 laptop way better than the Acer? It has a standalone graphics card, same amount of RAM and processor I can't directly compare.

And playing C&C3 is not important. I just used it as an example.

I know what Eve requires, and I still say don't expect wonders. :/

DON'T GET INTEGRATED GRAPHICS.

Get a mobile card. It's a pain in the ***, but you CAN upgrade most.

I have a DEll E1705
17'' widescreen (STFU, it's not that bad)
2.0 ghz Intel Core 2 DUO
2gb DDR2 667mhz ram
256mb Geforce Go 7900 GS
100GB 7200 rpm sata hard drive

For normal work I get about 3-4 hours of battery. For gaming like 1.5-2

I like it alot. Everyone told me I'd be happier with something smaller, but they can go to hell. This isn't that heavy, I have a nice bag for it, and it makes ALOT LESS HEAT than my desktop does. The only thing that bums me is the battery life, but laptops are very pro versus con. Just be sure you're happy with your pros and cons is all.

You have a seventeen-foot widescreen laptop? That's awesome.
