Concord, California. 30 miles east of San Francisco. Black widows are pretty common around here in the summer, I have no idea if they are throughout the US or where they are common and where they are not. All I know is we got em' here and the most effective way to kill em is with a self igniting propane torch.
I also use it for wolfspiders now too, I used to stomp them, but one time I stomped one that had a hundred babies on its back, and when the mommy died I could see all the microscopic babies scattering in all directions on my carpet. I had no way of killing them, so now when I see one I just roast it and all the babies fall right off dead next to the mom. I find em trapped in my pool all the time.
