The Electoral College is not contradictory to the person with the most votes winning. Generally the person with the most votes is still going to win. As I said, the electoral college is vital to keeping elections honest. Why do you think these third world countries that simply count ballots and the most votes wins have so much corruption? Sure the candidates are usually even worse than ours but it's because the system is so easy to abuse.

You realize that lots of non third-world countries use alternative voting methods which work quite well, right?

Would that involve guns, torture, and/or threats of rape? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

Actually, Ictus, (I could be wrong) I thought the supposed margin was 200,000 votes and not half a million. Be that as it may, we unfortunately don't have any set standard of verifying the legitimacy of votes in this country so it wouldn't surprise me if a number of votes were illegaly cast that MAY have contributed to that number anyway.

Hee. You're so funny and partisan.

Exactly, or pretty damn close. Another thing: the whole winner-takes-all thing essentially disenfranchises the 40% of California voters who supported Bush, or the 40% of Texas voters who supported Gore.

Is there anybody who still supports the idea?

Well, I admitted I could be wrong in the same post you replied to so I'm humble when necessary. However, you also clearly demonstrate how the majority of states also went for Bush. Thanks on both counts.

This last election was an anomoly and a virtual tie, anyway. Statistics, and most experts, would (/are) say(ing) that it won't happen again so soon. Personally, I'm not so sure. We'll see in a few months.

American debates between politicians always seem like such a serious, tactical, personal thing. Debates seem always to revolve around the politician himself, with personal attacks being the big thing.

Debates in the House of Commons, on the other hand, are comparatively hilarious. Blair had a good day in Parliament today, he was actually pretty funny (which is probably quite difficult to imagine). Debates seem to be about subtly and wittily mocking your opponent's argument and possibly party ideology in general too. Actually attacking Blair personally isn't any sort of standpoint. Cherie is an idiot, yes, but even that is the realm of tabloids.
Making the rest of the house go "YEEEEEEEEEH" in support is always a winner. You can get tickets to sit in on debates, and it's very popular with Americans, apparently. If ever you're in London try and sit in, I imagine it can be quite amusing.
