My adventures with MC Frontalot and Friends (with pictures!)

DISCLAIMER: CRAPPY CELL PHONE PICTURES WERE TAKEN BY ME. ALL OTHER PICTURES WERE SCAVENGED FROM OTHER SHOWS, AND ARE MERELY INTENDED AS ILLUSTRATIONS

If you all remember, I was going to play a show with MC Frontalot, and MC Lars, and Optimus Rhyme. Also, K. Flay (I had no idea who K. Flay was).

So I was at the venue, and I saw some nerds standing around. One of them had on a headband that said "ZombieK" and I knew I was supposed to meet him and some other people because he posts on a forum that I also post on. But his friends were talking about role-playing games and professed not to know me so I moved on.

After I took my stuff down, I saw none other than GABY ALTER.

Gaby Alter is MC Frontalot's very talented keyboardist and backup vocalist. It was cool because he is from the internet and it is always weird to see people from the internet in real life. He said I should talk to MC Frontalot about where to put my turn-tables.

Then, I saw MC Frontalot!

MC Frontalot gave me a big hug, and then we went about finding a place for my turn-tables.

Eventually we found a table that was about the right height, but it was only big enough for one turn-table. But that was okay, since I was playing with a band and you only need one turntable and a broken 808 or a mixer for scratching.

Then we did a sound check. My scratchy noises echoed through the small venue. Briefly.

After that, I went with MC Frontalot and a bunch of his friends to a taco store. I ordered a burrito, even though I was not hungry, and as a result only ate part of it. Fortunately, one of MC Frontalot's friends was hungrier, and ate it.

We went back to find K. Flay rapping about how she is a girl. This is K. Flay:

And she had a hype man named DJ who helped her rap about how she is a girl. DJ is not a girl, though. Here is DJ (and K. Flay again):

I think DJ also makes her beats maybe.

Anyway, I didn't know what to expect because I had never heard of her but she is very good at rapping, performing, and being funny. It was a good show, even though I missed some of it eating burritos that I did not really want to eat very much.

Then, Optimus Rhyme played. Optimus Rhyme is a rap music band from Seattle. They play many instruments and their rapper Wheelie Cyberman raps about things like being a taxicab driver in the future, and fighting the wackacons, and also moderating internet forums. Here is what they looked like playing:

Then, Optimus Rhyme did a special version of their Ping Pong song, featuring my new best friend MC Frontalot!

An annoying stage light made it virtually impossible to take a good picture. I was sad. As MC Frontalot left the stage after the song I tried to give him a high-five but he sort of grabbed my hand instead.

Then, MC Lars played! He had a big projector that projected funny cartoons and music videos while he rapped his songs. Though I had reservations about some of his lyrics, he had a very good live show, great energy, and people had a lot of fun.

Here is MC Lars telling everyone how he loves them a lot:

Meanwhile, I was running around with a million bottles of water trying to stay hydrated. One annoying thing was that the band room was basically next to the stage and cut off from everything else, so if I wanted to go anywhere I would have to push my way through the audience and back. I was outraged. Didn't they know I was quasi-famous?

No, they didn't.

Finally, it was time for MC Frontalot's show. Before it happened, he had us all do a warm-up where we said things in another (made up?) language, and did a strange dance. I kept messing up and doing everything at the wrong time. I'd like to think it was because Frontalot and his band had been doing it before every show and had a lot more practice, but in reality it was probably because I just suck. Also that backup singer Jessica Neighbor did it real good even though I think she was also just there for that one show.

I forgot to mention Jessica Neighbor, but she was very cool and also super good at singing.

I went over the set list briefly with MC Frontalot and showed him which sounds I was planning on scratching for what songs. Then, we went out onto the stage in front of cheering throngs. It was pretty cool.

I saw some audience guys standing in the front who were the other people from the internet I was supposed to meet. I think I sort of said hi but it was TIME FOR MUSIC.

So pretty much we played for quite a while. The crowd seemed to be very happy with my scratching noises, even though in one song (I Hate Your Blog) I accidentally had the wrong audio input in my headphones and could not hear what I was doing. That was very embarassing but apparently I was the only person who noticed. Also I had to use skipless samples instead of the ones I told Frontalot I would use, since all the people jumping around on the stage turned out to make the needle jump repeatedly.

Here is a picture of my view of the stage:

There is Blak Lotus, MC Frontalot's bassist, on the left. Appropriately, he is extremely dark and almost invisible. But you can make out his collar and shirt, kind of. In the middle is MC Frontalot himself, rapping. On the right is keyboardist Gaby Alter. Jessica Neighbor might be in the picture as well, but it is too dark to tell.

It should be noted that it was a lot easier to see than my cell phone makes it look. Apparently my cell phone does not eat enough carrots. Ha! Ha!

Then we played "Nerdcore Rising" and had MC Frontalot, AND MC Lars, AND Wheelie Cyberman, AND producer/international yo-yo champion Doctor Popular onstage. It was pretty cool.

Then we left, but we were only kidding and came back to do an encore. The last song that we played was about Star Wars water sports.

After that I got some CDs and a shirt from the Front, told Wheelie Cyberman how awesome his show was (and subsequently lost track of him before I could get his autograph for the guy on FP who wanted it. I am shamed!), and hung out for a brief bit with Doctor Popular and the guys from the internet. I signed a guy's hat, which was cool.

Then, I went back to the hotel and went to sleep.

The end!
