What kind of camera takes in images 360 degrees on three axis? Ohh...more than one. :o

Yeah, but if you look up there's nothing there, and if you look down there's nothing there.

You can composite 2 images together. Its possible they just took a photo of the ground and edited out the tripod.

Seriously; resizing a browser window without the user's consent must never be done, ever, under any circumstance, end of story. I have a good reason to whine here. It's so farking annoying!

Especially considering I run at 1600*1200 and the browser window only fills about a third of that area..

That's the thing. It made my browser window fill the whole screen WITHOUT being "truly" maximized. So just hitting the maximize button would do no good. :(

Nice. It was like looking around in an FPS game. An FPS game with really good graphics.

So tell Firefox to not resize when instructed to by Javascript?

There was a bit of software in beta a few months back that converted images into crude 3d images like this.

It's not really all that complicated. suspect it's about four or five different pictures merged. The illusion of perspective has been around for a while. For example.

The pictures are in a 3D box with a similar perspective filter. There are 3D tours of movie sets or whatnot where they use the same technology. I don't know all of the details, but I think that's the jest of how this works.
My blawgh.

What I find impressive is that they captured all of them at once. It's not just a still scene where they can take their time.

If you use a ball bearing (a couple of inches in diameter) you can take a photo of the surrounding area fairly quickly

Yeah but it looks a lot faster than "fairly quickly"

Multiple cameras synced to take the picture at the same time is all it is. That's how most good 3D camera systems work generally.

It's like those amazing wildlife movies, where they use dozens of cameras to film a bird in flight or something, and then cycle through the cameras to make it look like the camera is circling the bird while the bird is taking off. Does anyone know what that is called?

Sounds like you're describing time-slice photography, like what they used in The Matrix to get the shots revolving around Neo and such.
2007-05-13, 2:21 AM #28
It can't have been a really elaborate setup in any case. A 4-5 camera rig would draw a lot of attention, and even in his calmer scenes, nobody's even looking at the camera directly.
2007-05-13, 2:53 AM #29
That's funny I just finished playing through Myst 3: Exile yesterday. Same type of 3D panoramas.

It could be a heavily edited composite of a few photos, don't you think? I don't see how one could spontaneously shoot something like that.

That can't be it. Time-slice photography is done by basically surrounding the object with cameras (or putting the cameras in an arc if you're cheap) and then shooting them all at the same time. It can give you the illusion of rotating around the object, but not the illusion of the 3D panorama we see here. I'm pretty sure it's a composite of photographs. Have no idea how he shot them all at once though.

Yeah that's exactly what they did in the Matrix. They surrounded Reeves with cameras and started filming at the same time.

It's just 6 images. It's a ****ing SKYBOX. It's nothing special.

It's a skybox of a fast moving scene you dolt. That's why it's impressive.

There is a program called Quicktime Virtual Reality that specifically takes still images and composites them into something like this.

you need a VR tripod head, or a special camera to do it. my guess is this guy had one of those special pano cameras that have the motorized tripod head on them. they can go 360 pretty damn fast.

with a lens with a wide enough angle he could easily just edit the top/bottom of the photos together.

If it has a motorized mechanism, I'm thinking there would have been blur somewhere, seeing that regular cameras have issues with capturing a single moving scene. But, then again, I don't know much about photography.

The thing rotates at a set speed with the camera clicking at regular intervals, so that the edges of the photographs overlap somewhat. the camera is always shooting faster than the thing is moving.

the software i was talking about can also be used for still panos. i used it a couple years ago. spring 05 i think? sounds about right, but i made a thread in showcase with all of them in there. i also made some vr "movies" like the one in question, but i didnt have anything wide enough to get the ceiling/floor. if i still had the file i would upload it, but really the most complicated part of the process is shooting. the rest is plugging the images into the program and letting it do it's thing.

What would impress me (what I thought this was before it finished loading) if it the whole thing was like a 5-10 second movie clip in full 3-d.
