Setting up server at home
2007-05-13, 12:11 PM #1
I'm trying to set up a server at home for a small home business. Right now I've got a Mac Mini Core 2 Duo 2.13 with 2GB RAM running Mac OS X Server 10.4. The web portion of it works fine, I have the domain pointing to it and everything, but I can't get the email server to work.

Every time I try to send mail the server says the connection times out, and the mail I should be receiving never comes in...

Any ideas? If my ISP is blocking is there a way around it?

Perhaps you could provide more details, like which e-mail server you are running, the settings your firewall uses, the output of "sockstat -4", etc. Since the userland is based on that of FreeBSD and NetBSD, it should be relatively easy to diagnose your problem.

The server is Postfix, the output of sockstat -4 is:

-bash: sockstat: command not found

:P

That's not helpful at all i know

Well, I guess they don't have sockstat then. :P You can install it through Darwin ports if you feel the need.

I would check your firewall log and see if it is preventing the mail from coming in. I believe Postfix listens on port 25 by default, which you have blocked.

Well, then something is configured wrong or your ISP is blocking it. You could try telnetting to port 25 on your box from the outside to see if your ISP blocks that port. If you ISP doesn't block the port, you should successfully connect to your mail server. Also, might be worth showing us your configuration for Postfix.
