Massassi must adapt

After seeing a grand daddy total of ONE post in the cog forum, and 5 in the editing forum, its obvious JK aint doing soo well (unless it means all editors are perfect and dont need help, liek me! <:¬D )
and also JA is just hangin on...

So will massassi usurp the mantel for editing other games now? HL2 and FarCry etc?
Lets face it, theres immense potential here, and many many talented editors here.

Do you forsee the HL2 editing forums and such? I hope so! I think massassi can survive indefinately.

Chances are we will move in this direction if and only if:

1) MII finally gets done
2) There is sufficient desire in the community to support a splinter community for a non-SW game. Or if high profile admins develop a love of a certain game (this is why massassi.net/serious exists).

I have a frim belief that Massassi will always be about Star Wars. Maybe not of JK which it was originally founded on, but it will definitely be a majority of Star Wars fans and editing.

Massassi is a community. Although we came together at first to work on one game, our community spirit and special friendships created from interaction on this site will continue for forever.

True, Maxis, but I think we need new people and something to attract those people. We have a slow trickle coming in, but the great majority of people who have ever heard of Massassi can only leave.

As strange as it sounds, it might be close to that. I'm not seeing any noob questions lately, so it's possible that we just need less help. I just got back into editing jk, and there's quite a few people in there that weren't there when I left. They all seem to have a pretty good grasp on editing, imo.

Massassi - The name of a temple on a jungle planet in a galaxy, far far away, in a universe called Star Wars.

If we start making whole new forums and sections for other games that have nothing to do with Star Wars, we will most likely change our name to something completely bland, and then we could become one of the thousands of unoriginal game editing websites out there. Eventually, the URL 'www.massassi.net' would be bought by some freaks who don't deserve it...

this is all speculation.

But my point is that The Massassi Temple has always been a Star Wars site, is presently a Star Wars site, and will live on as an all Star Wars game editing site for many years to come!!! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif] [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif] [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

I think we should keep editing and being a community. The editing is more of a fun thing we do on the side while the community is something we try to dedicate ourselves too. I think we should definitely branch out of the dark forces/jk realm and into more star wars game editing but keep it in star wars because this site was founded on star wars games.

no!!!

i have got tons of quistions for people here at massassi and i have gotted a lot of respect for some editors (gothicx, lassev, echoman, freyer) and they have all helped me to what i am now. Its stupid. The massassi temple. THE MASSASSI TEMPLE IS A TEMPLE IN STAR WARS! not in half life or other games. And i have been bussy on alot of levels. My new one isnt build with that much detail BUT IT IS BUILD AND I WANT REPLIES BY PEOPLE ON MASSASSI! not on another site. I have came here by accident and now i am visiting the site at least every week. Not always replying but always checking. So dont close this whole massassi temple and make it a unreal or half life temple. It started as star wars and will end as star wars.

End of the screaming (what a relief)

...Uh I think Massassi's here to stay, at least for a while. For me the reason why less people are editing is that JK editing was at its top when JO was set to come out, and lots of the TCs stopped working assuming that JO would be the end of JK gaming. After a couple of years JO and JA are losing their appeal to people but there just isn't enough interest in JK for people to turn to it and make serious attempts at levels/mods.

One thing that has stopped editing from going completely is the friendly massassi atmosphere, with little n00b flaming compared to other boards.

I think it's hard to judge just how many people have an interest in JK editing and need and appreciate the resources that are here just by counting the number of posts in the forums or by who responds to this particular thread.

For this, I'll use myself as an example. I would love to participate more in the forums if I had the opportunity. I'm also still very enthusiastic about JK editing and would love a chance to show everyone here the cool things that can still be done with an old engine.

I think it's fine for people to pursue their changing interests, and since Massassi has never been exclusively about Star Wars game editing, the community should support that.

On the other hand, there is no other site that supports/has supported the needs of people with obsession for JK that they can't get rid of despite the waxing and waning of enthusiasm/spare time. This is one of the things that Massassi has to differentiate itself from other sites. I don't Massassi's involvement in Jk/Sw editing will ever die altogether, because I trust that the community and the management understand that it is part of our character and uniqueness.

We have to accept the fact that people's interests change over time. In editing, there seems to be a trend where the sheer collective energy of the fans towards a new game will make a community seem to be thriving and and healthy. This is an unstable situation because it's usually true that a big percentage of people's enthusiasm is about being a part of the latest and greatest thing. New games released every year, so the people who consider this the most important motivation for their participation are going to move around constantly.

I think a successful community has to cater to both things -- people's changing interests, and the ones they sustain in various forms. If Massassi's sole function is is try to keep pace with the moving crowd of editing and gaming transients, it is redundant.

So, bleh. There are two areas in which I see potential for this site to grow/improve. The first is to stay relavent and current like everybody else is trying to do. The second is to continue to promote the elements that have proved sustainable over the last (is it 7?) years. I think this promotion should include the community collectively discussing ways to make the JK editing portion better for anyone who still has an interest.

I think I'll start a new thread on this subject.

The interest in JO/JA is still there, but the serious editors have gone elsewhere. I think the best strategy to bring talent back to Massassi is to host a level contest for JO/JA, something we haven't done before.

Too dang right - I want more choice with my smilies (hey - as if I couldn't supply enough for the entire community alone...) [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

In all seriousness though, time and time again we've seen and heard these suggestions before and nothing's come of it - many people thought that JO would probably be the clincher for prompting the site to change with the times, and yet despite more questions+responses in the JO/JA forums, the vast majority of levels being produced are predominantly JK/MotS based. Heck, if you check out most of the big mods in progress, other than TMU and AOTC:TC, there are none that immediately stand out... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/redface.gif]

As for a shift away from Star Wars ... well this is purely my personal view speculating here, but I can't see anything immediately materialising; if we're having waits/troubles/issues with the new *cough*how-long-are-we going-to-wait- [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]*cough* back-end, then can you imagine the difficulty (and time complexity issues) involved in setting up another sub-section of the site dedicated to something else then it may be easier to just stick with the Star Wars theme - heck, at least we all know that aspect works, as we're still getting new-comers [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

I think Jagged's hit it spot on - Massassi is incredibly big-hearted when it comes to extending arms and greeting new folk from all over the world - a "gift" that often isn't "offered" on various other forums. Whilst I'm (vaguely) on-topic, I also think it would be a shame to lose several forums by merging them - ok, sure we get the odd question in the wrong forum (usually JO/JA in the "Main Editing Forum" {sidenote: can we please do something about that? </end political rant> [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]}, but for the most part, we've already seen the merging of JO with JA, simply because JO wasn't receiving much attention, not to mention a couple of other forums falling under the axe....

...and as a personal aside, I refuse to let my JK/MotS work go unfinished just because there may not be as many players as there once were - JK's got the longevity - the fact we're here at this moment in time and still[i/] debating if we should "upgrade" after 7 years, makes you wonder... . That and the fact of wherelse am I going to showcase stuff for a 7 year old game and be told "Wow - great archi!!!"? I think it's simply a matter of organization. What we need are some high profile community projects, with teams comprised of dedicated individuals in a multitude of games. There's nothing wrong with editing other games, but we should be developing teams to make SW Mods. There are so many talented people here, and out there, and it's just a shame to see no organization. People are always worried about their next little level or mod that no one is going to play anyways, when they should be focusing on doing things as a group.

Personally, I love the idea that always surfaces but never gets taken on, of revamping JK (models, textures, modes, etc). I think people really underestimate how much something like that would be appreciated by the community.

Why are non-Massassians making all of the cool SW Mods for other games, and we just sit here twiddling our thumbs doing the same old stale crap? No one thing is going to save this community...we need organization, and people that can learn to focus on a project, instead of always focusing on themselves. The potential is here...it's just a shame seeing it going to waste.

In other words...stop what you're doing, and ORGANIZE! Throw down that tired old DM map that's really just a compilation of overused ideas, and start or join a TEAM!

Have we ever attempted to make a collective petition of all the massassi editors to ask LEC for the SDK? I know they've never released an SDK before, but how many members do we have? If we all signed (WITH REAL NAMES) and gave our own insight (without it turning into another one of those 'OMQ GIVE IT TO US!!' petitions), and pointed out that this community has brought people to play a 7 year old game recently (hell, I only just now bought MotS), it would increase their profits. It's worth a shot, and I'm sure we've never done it.

Yecti, you have a great point. This site can be the foundation for a petition for the engine release. It would definitely attract the supporters. Revitalization of the site might not be in having a great project but at least in creating a hype or bringing a lot of people together for a common cause.

To make LEC feel more secure, some control over the distribution of the SDK can be embodied in the Massassi Temple. This site will be the control point for all operations with the SDK as well as the supervisor of its application. It will place restrictions and maintain them in compliance with LEC.

Others mentioned that people usually move to the next "big thing." That is a true fact. Instead of bringing the next big thing to Massassi, let's start one! An SDK petition would be a perfect chance.

Along the line with team based editing projects, this site can expand to be a home for project groups, providing hosting services and cooperative abilities. That would definitely revive the site; there would be a slew of new visitors who are interested in those projects.

That is all I have to say about that. We should continue this SDK Petition discussion. There is hope, but we need ORGANIZATION. If this site isn't dead, then we will be able to assemble people as soon as possible.

I'm not so sure about distribution and Massassi acting as a front for the SDK. However, we are the largest collection of Jedi Knight gamers active on the internet. We consistantly release new content for an aging system, and continue to bring new revenue dollars to LEC. Of course they would have to release the SDK themselves, and they could impose whatever restrictions that they wanted, but what would bennefit them would be even more new revenue, and increased company interest.

Let's face it, lately LEC has been lacking in it's productions lately. If they were to have more / new people looking at them as a major contributor, then it might also entice them to make better games and thus produce MORE revenue.

I fail to see where it damages LEC at all, especially after seven years of the game surviving on a single website. id hasn't felt any pain from releasing Quake and Quake II.
