So the other day was my birthday. Yay horray it was fun!

I went out to the bar with some awesome people and had a great time. a bunch of my friends called me to wish me a happy birthday.

After the bar I listened to a voicemail someone had left me, and decided to call one of them back.

We talked about my birthday, summer plans, and a few other things.

So during a brief pause he asked if I remembered this girl we went to high school with. The change in tone of his voice was so quick to go from happy to completely neutral.
I said yes that I knew her.

And then he said "Dude.... she died"

Before he could even finish saying that I said "Holy ****, youre ****ing kidding me."
I dont think I thought it was a joke, but I couldnt believe it.

And I dont have a foul mouth like that most of the time, but this was just so out of nowhere.

She wasnt killed, she didnt die naturally. She committed suicide. She was in a facility and thats all I know.

This is so ****ing ridiculous. I cant even really think of what to say. I need to vent mostly since I was taken so off guard by this.

I've been lucky to never know anyone who has done that. Well, one person, but I was so young when it happened it didn't really effect me.

Happy Birthday on a lighter note.

That really sucks... two of my friends have died in the past 6 months too. One by suicide and the other is unknown but thought to be suicide or overdose.

Overdose (of illegal drugs) is considered suicide.

Umm, by some people.

I'm not one of them

It doesn't matter what you think. The hospitals and county coroners all consider overdose of illegal drugs to be suicide.

Anyway, that's sad mb. That's really bad.

A good friend of mine killed herself when I was a senior in high school. It was pretty much out of the blue. It's never a good thing to hear.

I found out today that a kid I knew down the street a few years ago is now in jail for robbery. Never would have expected that -- he seemed like a nice enough guy and all. =\

A little more than 2 years ago I believe, my friend's girlfriend committed suicide. The last thing he said (over AIM?) was something like "I'm going to go play WoW now... ttyl"
He hasn't played WoW since.

Life is full of surprises... many of which suck badly

Now I just need to talk to a suicidal person and the last thing I'll say to them is I'm off to <insert bad habit here>

I think to consider it a suicide there should be reasonable evidence of intent. If the person left a suicide note, then fine, consider it a suicide. But if they didn't, and there's no other compelling evidence, labeling a possible accidental OD as a suicide is irresponsible to say the least.

You know, there are plenty of threads on Massassi that could use derailing but this is not one of them. Please, STOP.

Back to the topic: That's sad to here MB. I guess I should consider myself fortunate that I don't have any connection whatsoever to anyone I knew from high school because I left San Jose to move down to Riverside before my last year of school ended.

Oh, how rude of me. I guess I should join the bandwith-wasting party by consoling mb for his "loss" that shouldn't be affecting him in the first place.

A kid who graduated from my high school last year died in a car accident this year. I didn't know him, but I felt horrible thinking that he didn't even get to make it a year past high school.

A teacher at my High School/Sixth Form College ended up being charged with possessing, producing, and distributing child porn. I think he got convicted, but I can't remember. It was weird because he was obviously an eccentric guy, but because we had so many teachers with odd quirks no-one ever gave him a second thought until it came to light.

I used to have a friend in middle school named Aaron.

A little more than a year ago, he killed somebody with his car, and is now spending the rest of his life in prison.

What a way to waste a life.

I'm sorry to hear that MB. Good vibes to you, friend.

I know what you are going through. I lost an old friend in a car accident. Was called up one morning by an ex. I was all surprised and happy she'd call out of the blue just to get some news and let me know she was alive. Heh, little did i know she was actually calling to give me news that someone I knew was dead.

I don't know what's worse, that statement, or the fact that you were dumb enough to say that to an admin.

Sorry to hear that, MB, did you know her well?

The only thing I can think of is being told by my friend that his dad was probably going to die within the week. As it was, he died the next day. I knew he wasn't exactly 100%, but it was still a whoa moment.

On the morning of my 18th birthday I got up, went to my computer, and checked my email. There was a message from the owner of one of my local paintball fields. A former ref and guy that I had played with quite a bit since I'd started had been in a car accident early that morning. He was on his way home, crashed into a tree, and burned to death. It was really shocking. I don't remember how old he was at the time, around 18-20.

Just want to make it clear that my last post was directed at no one in particular but anyone who was attempting to go off topic by discussing the issue with suicide with illegal drugs. The fact that I cause Freelancer to make a uncompassionate comment which lead to his banning was a nice bonus though. :P

Now... if only I can get Yoshi banned next...

Found out a guy I knew was driving down the highway, fell asleep, rolled his van, and, while it was rolling, he was "partially ejected".

Another guy, whose brother hung himself, was killed, I believe, by a tree branch that was blown down by high winds (they were hiking and a storm unexpectedly shifted in their direction, I believe). I felt so terrible for the parents, who had lost both of their sons within eight years' time, made only worse by the fact that the guy was a rehabilitated drug user; all the effort put into overcoming his addiction to meet his end at less than 22 years of age.

Sorry to hear about your loss, em bee. I hope everything turns out well for you and fellow company.

About 5 kids I've known have committed suicide since I graduated last year. Ten became junkies. Even more have gotten into things that they should never have touched.

Windowmakers, as we call them, were the first things we talked about regarding safety in my wildfire training because they kill more firefighters than fire does.

That is a terrible thing to have happen. In fact I had a cousin who died 1 week before his prom and 3 weeks before graduation, felt so bad for his parents as they would never get to see him graduate.
