Coming to you from my new laptop

So, my new laptop came today, a full week earlier than expected. So far, I'm really liking it, though I'm still getting used to these flat keys. 1.7 Ghz Intel Core Duo 2, GeForce Go 7900 GS, 2 gigs of RAM, Vista Ultimate, 17" screen. It runs games better than my desktop. XD

There is a couple issues, though. The biggest one is I can't figure out how to change the brightness on the screen. I've tried the OS help and troubleshooting guides, but they don't help. It also didn't come with an Owner's Manual. Having a more rectangular screen than my desktop will take some getting used to as well.

Now I'm trying to get some wireless internet with it. I know it came with some sort of wireless internet card, but I'm not sure how to use it. Basically, what I want to do is hook up a wireless connection to my DSL modem so I don't have to plug my laptop in everytime I want to get on the internet. However, from what I seen, not only do you need to grab the USB plug in for the laptop, you also need to get another big transmitter with two antennae to hook to the DSL modem. Both those together cost $100+, so screw that.

Anyone know of any other ways to do the wireless internet between the laptop and the DSL modem without shelling out $100?

edit: forgot to mention, the speakers on the laptop are pretty loud, which means I won't have to buy external ones.

The wireless receiver should be be built in. Nearly every laptop cames with that, standard. You do need to get a wireless router though.

Brightness is normally controlled by holding down the Fn key and pressing certain keys on the keyboard (normally one of the F1-F12) keys. Look for a key with a little symbol on it that looks like a sun.

If you find that the brightness is actually turned all of the way up, try resetting your BIOS to the default settings. While this doesn't work on all notebooks, it does work on quite a few (e.g., Vaio's).
